First Time Ever...My French Country Guest Bath

Today I am showing you a part of my house that you have never seen…my French country guest bath! I took a few photos of it with the little Christmas touches still there and decided I would share them. It is sporting something new that I am excited about! Can you guess what it is?

The staff is totally unimpressed and is taking advantage of a little sunny spot to have a group snooze! However, they should be impressed because...

...the inspiration for the bath was the wonderful French print by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen whose art work often includes cats! But when I was searching for a shower curtain, I was stumped…nothing looked frenchy…

…until I spied these buffalo check drapery panels, purchased at a reduced price when Linens and Things was closing. They just called my name and made me buy them! I like my bathrooms to look like just another room of the house…because they are! No worries...there's a liner tucked in behind them!

And here is a better look at the sink and my new addition…my new frenchy fixtures! And, of course, you cannot find a room in my house without plates...

...and maybe even a sugar and creamer to hold little French soaps! That’s one of my favorite transferware patterns…Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles in pink.

On the other side of the room is a little more Christmas with a wreath added to a toile-framed frenchy picture, a towel bar from the old Southern Living at Home. For those of you who have asked, it is part of a four piece set called "Serenity" that I still see occasionally online or at Goodwill, although I spray painted mine black rather than keep the original gun metal grey.

I added my easy Joyeux Noël French tea towels to serve as hand towels for the Christmas season. You can find directions for making them including the graphic  here. 

And there you have it...my Frenchy guest bath! I feel transported to la Belle Époque each time I see it and I smile!

Easy Vintage French Planter Box

I have a fun and easy project to share with you today…my vintage French planter box…made from something that may surprise you…

…a box from the clementines that I bought at Christmas! I have been saving this box and waiting for the perfect project…and I think I have found it!

I also wanted a chance to try out the sample pots of Annie Sloan chalk paint that I bought a while back. I started with two coats of Arles and finished with a skimpy coat of Old White, purposely missing a few spots.





Next, I created a label using a portion of a vintage French graphic of a pastry shop ad from…who else?…Karen at The Graphics Fairy! I added my own lettering…Miel de Lavande…lavender honey. I printed it in 8 x 10 size using Photoscape and trimmed the excess.

Then I aged the label using tea dye Distress Ink applied with a small sea sponge. I attached it with Mod Podge, adding an extra coat of it to the surface of the label.

Now all it needed was some lavender to go with the label, so I added several pots and covered them with lots of Spanish moss. I think I am going to try applying several coats of clear polyurethane and leaving it outside in a sheltered area of the patio.  I’ll keep you posted on how it weathers!

And speaking of weather…it has been beautiful here! I have finally quit waiting for the other shoe to drop and decided that spring is really here! A sign…those little maple helicopters are everywhere! Our co-host Baby Kitty is having a relaxing afternoon on the patio after a stressful morning trip to the vet’s for his shots…ouch!

And here’s a final look. Not bad for an old clementine box that I nearly put in recycling, huh? And best of all...it was free! I already had everything I needed! I think I am really going to enjoy it!
