Bunnies aren't just for Easter! Spring is almost here and my bunnies are itching to get out of the storage box! I try not to go overboard and be too cutesy, but for me, it just wouldn't be spring without a few rascally rabbits scattered about! Whoa! Easter is really sneaking up on me this year! Have you realized that it's only a few short weeks away? It's time for me to get my crafting on! And in the meantime I'm sharing some fun and very different ways to decorate your eggs this year using everything from moss to silk ties! And they're all easy...always a plus!

Easy Moss-Covered Easter Eggs

Spring has sprung at my house! The robins are back and I saw my first katydid yesterday. And...with Easter only a few short weeks away, it's time to get my crafting on! So I am excited to share my latest project...my moss-covered Easter eggs! And they were easy and inexpensive to make...always a plus!

Have I got a fun and easy Easter project for you…my Pottery Barn inspired glitter eggs! And I did it in almost no time because I cheated! Let me walk you through the steps and I will share my secret! You are not going to believe it, it’s sooo easy!

{Silk Tie} Dyed Eggs

There are only a few days left until Easter…just enough time for me to show you one last project…my silk dyed eggs!  For these eggs, I used a fun and different method to achieve the patterns and colors…old silk ties and scarves!

Our co-host today Miss Kitty did a little research and found some easy-to-follow instructions here…courtesy of…who else?…Martha Stewart! I just followed along, doing exactly as Martha suggests. I did find on another website, however, that these eggs should not be eaten since the dye is not food safe.

A trip to Goodwill netted me some silk ties in festive Easter-y colors plus a silk scarf in a pretty shade of green. You must be sure that they are 100% silk or it will not work…so only use ties that are clearly labeled.

Once the eggs were finished and I could get a look at the result, I was excited to see how they turned out! The scarf actually seemed to leave the best pattern…almost perfect!

And I loved the effect of the silk ties…a print of the original fabric on the front and a tie-dyed look on the back where the fabric had been gathered up with a rubber band.

Don’t you love these eggs? I think I almost like the swirly pattern from the back more than the one on the front! Now I think I am ready for Easter!

And it looks like Baby Kitty is ready, too! And as Martha says...that’s a good thing…since the Easter bunny will soon be stopping by for a visit!  So the staff at Plate Addict and I are wishing lots of chocolate bunnies and jelly beans for you along with a very happy Easter!

Botanical Découpage Eggs

I’ve been at it again! Découpage is becoming one of my favorite things to do! This time I used pretty table napkins with a springy botanical theme to create some Easter eggs.

It looks as though I will be alone on this project, though, since our co-host Baby Kitty is busy spying on a flock of blackbirds gathering on the front lawn…a hopeful sign of spring’s imminent arrival!

I find that my découpage skills seem improve with practice. However, it’s OK if the result is not perfect. I tell myself that just adds to the charm! Here's what I did but you can also find a few tips here.

1. I started with some pretty napkins that I found at Party City…$1.79 per pack. Next, I spray-painted some Dollar Tree plastic eggs an ivory color just in case a little background shows. I also used matte finish Mod Podge for this part of the project.

2. I used two methods to cover the eggs. The fastest, but most challenging is to use one image for the job. Just cut a rectangle a little wider and longer than the egg. Next, remove the second plain layer if the napkins are two-ply as mine were. Then cut part way in on either long side, removing every other tab. Use a brush to add some Mod Podge on a section of the egg surface and smooth the paper on, using the brush dipped in more Mod Podge and folding the little tabs over each other at the top. Work quickly and touch the egg as little as possible, working on one section at a time. Let dry.

3. Another method is to use smaller cut-outs of elements in the napkin and add them one at a time. Don’t forget to remove the second plain layer if they are two-ply. You will find that you have to work in a small section, let it dry and then work on another section. Keep your hand as clean and dry as possible so that the cut-outs do not stick to them. Work until the egg is covered.

4. Finally, let the eggs dry overnight and then brush with a coat of luster finish Mod Podge, first coating one half, let dry and then coating the other half. Let dry overnight.
  And here they are! Aren’t they just so springy? I'm displaying them in my vintage ironstone sugar scuttle. I'll show you more of it another time.

These eggs were made by adding small cut-outs one at a time….little purple flowers for one, and leaves from the tulips for the other. 

This one was created from the tulip…one image covering the entire egg.

And my favorite…this one is made from the single image of a rose.

Here’s a final look. What do you think? I am becoming addicted to découpage and looking around for my next project! What can I say? I love the smell of Mod Podge in the morning! lol

Pottery Barn Inspired Easter Eggs

A sunny day and some blossoms on the trees are making me feel like spring is finally on the way! Sooo...I am really excited to show you my latest project...my Pottery Barn inspired Easter eggs!

As soon as I saw these eggs from Pottery Barn, I knew I had to try my hand at re-creating them...but with one change. I wanted to use pretty pastel colors because they just say Easter to me!

So I was happy to find these eggs at Hobby Lobby...on sale for about $7.00...waaay better than Pottery Barn's $20 plus shipping! They already have little organdy ribbons attached for hanging and I love the little speckles, too!



I already knew which font I would use for the graphic...one of my favorites...My Old Remington. Next, I went in search of instructions for printing on tissue paper and found this video from Shimmy Bean Creations. I have to admit that I tried going a little rogue and experimenting with her instructions...bad idea. I had to fall back on my years of experience as a teacher in clearing paper jams from the Xerox machine! However, I managed to get two good copies...an extra in case I messed up...which I did.

First, I cut out the letters. It doesn't have to be perfect. Since it is tissue paper and will not show very much, you can allow a little extra around the edges. This makes them easier to handle, too.
Next, I used a brush to cover a section of the egg with Mod Podge (I used the matte finish) and then carefully apply the letter. Try to handle it as little as possible,  using the brush dipped in more Mod Podge to move it around and smooth it out. There will be a few wrinkles, but that's OK.  To me, that's part of the look.
Finally, I let them dry overnight. I hung them on my kitchen cabinet knobs for this part of the process.

Miss Kitty would like to show you how they turned out...not bad, huh? Love those Easter-y pastel colors!

And here it is…the Pottery Barn copy-cat shot! My bunnies came from Target. Cute, huh? Work it, girls! I’ll be posting this one at Debbiedoo’s for the spring Copycat Party!

And here is the result!  I think  I am really going to enjoy them because they can be used in so many different ways...added to a pretty glass container as vase filler, tied along a length of twine as a garland...my head is spinning! Now if spring will just hurry up and get here, I will really be excited!

A Favorite Spring Project...French Découpage Eggs

With Easter only a month away and spring fast approaching, I thought I would show you one of my all-time favorite projects that some of you may not have seen before…my French découpage eggs! They are an easy, inexpensive and fun way to add some frenchiness to your spring decor!

Here is how they started out…a package of plastic eggs from Dollar Tree, an old French-English dictionary from Goodwill for $2.50 and a left-over supply of Mod Podge. I work with the matte finish to add the paper and add two final coats of the luster finish to give them a little shine. It’s a water-based product, so if it has gotten a little thick, you can add a little water to thin it down. I should add that the eggs have a little plastic hinge that protrudes and had to be cut off with a knife before I started.

And here is how they turned out! I used the method that I described in my sheet music ornament post for two of them, using small strips added individually. For the château egg, I used one picture to cover the entire egg. You can see it in the photo above.

I will give you a closer look at each of them. It’s hard to make them perfect, but the imperfection is part of the beauty to me. I will tell you a secret for making them smoother, though. I let the first coat of the two final coats of Mod Podge dry for about 30 minutes, then I dry it with the hair dryer on low for a minute or so. Afterward, it is slightly tacky to the touch. Next I gently take it in my hands and press it all over, sealing the overlaps and smoothing it.Then I add the final coat. It really gives a more finished look to the egg.

I used the dictionary to create this one. Hmmm…I think I will find an old French paperback for my next one. A little too much English showed up. However, I added the words Joyeuses Pâques…Happy Easter…to give it a little more frenchy flavor.

This one is my first attempt at using one drawing to cover the entire egg. I cut the picture in a rectangle a little wider and longer than the egg and then cut in at intervals from the top and the bottom, leaving the center one-third intact. I smoothed and overlapped these sections as I worked in the Mod Podge. Next time, I think  I would make the cuts a little narrower, but I was trying to save as much as I could of the original appearance of the château drawing.

Of course, our co-host Baby Kitty had to check out the work. Don’t you love the little silver nest cup? It was a gift from my sweet friend Pat. What a pleasant surprise to find it in my mailbox at the end of my first week of helping with my little grandson…a fun but tiring time. The little crowned bird came from Michaels and was half price at $2.49…a real steal!

And I had to add this one…my Notre-Dame Cathedral egg made with some Parisian inspired wrapping paper that I found for half-price at Hobby Lobby! It is also made with one drawing covering the entire egg. I think this one is my favorite. Click here to see more things that I have done with the paper.
