Easy and Inexpensive Faux Pumpkin Planter

I have a confession...this one is soooo easy that I hesitate to call it a tutorial! In fact, I can't believe that I didn't think of it sooner! And it's super inexpensive, too! I'm using softer colors in my fall décor this year and my previous pumpkin planter didn't quite work. I was eyeing those white craft pumpkins but they were either too short or too big and tall for my purposes. Then it dawned on me...

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy and Inexpensive Faux Pumpkin Planter2...why not just paint a plastic trick-or-treat pumpkin! And I love the result!

Here's what you will need:
  • Plastic pumpkin (any color)
  • Cream matte spray paint (I used Krylon Cover Maxx in Ivory/Satin. Don't use white since real white pumpkins are not actually white. ;-)  A matte finish will make your pumpkin look more realistic, too.)
  • Scissors

And here's what you will do:
  1. Remove the handle and cut away enough of the top portion of the pumpkin to allow room for a flower pot. I cut away about the top inch or so to fit a one gallon container.
  2. Spray paint the pumpkin with several coats, letting it dry completely between coats. Don't try to save time by using thick coats. It will run! I actually used most of the can to get good coverage.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy and Inexpensive Faux Pumpkin Planter3Now simply add a square of burlap to add some texture and to hide the cut-away top. Add your flowers and...voila!...a super duper easy fall planter!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy and Inexpensive Faux Pumpkin Planter6The back side hides a jack-o-lantern face but nobody will see that side at my house. You could even use that side for a softer side of Halloween if you wish! ;-)

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy and Inexpensive Faux Pumpkin Planter7I added it to a woven tray of white pumpkins and gourds for a pretty little centerpiece on my breakfast room table. I love it!

And just in case you have not seen the one that I made previously, here it is...my BURLAP DECOUPAGE PUMPKIN PLANTER! I even added a big pumpkin leaf and some tendrils! And...it was also made using a plastic pumpkin. Now my little wheels are turning for more ways to use them!

And stay tuned because I have more ideas for easy and inexpensive fall décor!

Remember to pin it!
