Somebody stop me! I made another pillow! lol I do seem to have a thing about them…and you can use them to make easy changes to your decor each season!
This time my inspiration was this wonderful collection of birdcage print pillows from Pottery Barn. They are reproductions of a trio of paintings by Laurie Rohrbach. Of course, the blue one is my favorite. And, as luck would have it, they are on sale, but the blue one is no longer available. Sooo…I decided to make my own!
I started with a wonderful vintage birdcage graphic from The Graphics Fairy, gave it a blue water color look using PhotoScape, and then layered in her lovely canary graphic that I altered a bit. Thanks so much, Karen, for the fabulous graphics you so generously share with us! I flipped it for you so that it can be printed on iron-on transfer paper. Just follow the directions on the package. I used a cream twill for the front and a cream burlap for the back, finishing it with an envelope closure so that I can reuse the pillow.
Once the pillow cover was finished, I added some trim from my ribbon stash. First I used yellow grosgrain ribbon for the outer edge. Theirs had a light blue flange, but I chose to simply attach the ribbon using fabric glue. I mitered the corners for a more finished look.
Then I added an additional stripe of light blue ribbon around the graphic…also using fabric glue to hold it in place.
Finally, I popped in a down insert from Goodwill…a fabulous bargain at $1.51 since it was the 50% off color of the day! Baby Kitty seems totally unimpressed by my work, preferring the real birds outside the window instead!
And here they are…Pottery Barn’s pillow on the left and mine on the right. Not bad for virtually free since I already had everything but the insert! I decided to flip the trim colors and to use just one birdcage instead of two as in their version. It looks a little less crowded to me.
And here is a final look! I think it looks so crisp and summery! And it’s my favorite colors, too! I think I am really going to enjoy this one!
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed a little peek at my birdcage pillow! Please visit these wonderful bloggers and their beautiful blogs to see what they are up to and to find a list of this week’s participants!

My gosh! I CAN'T tell you to quit when you are making such GREAT pillows. I LOVE this one and the yellow is a sweet touch- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThis one if my favorite of all time Debbie!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant girlfriend, you could easily sell these if you ever get too many! hehe.
Really and truly yours are better than PB.s!
Hugs,
Cindy
Oh I love it. Another one for me to copy. Thanks.....
ReplyDeleteYou make the best pillows!
ReplyDeleteYou need to sell these online... they are soooo cool!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Debbie! I love these birdcage pillows and yours is a great copycat! Love the trim you added, too. Gave you a shout out the other day ~ I did the artichoke tea towels for my Mom when I went back to NY to visit and she loved them.
ReplyDeleteAs I commented on facebook...I love yours even more! What a cool idea. I didn't understand the whole printing thing but I'm going to save it and when I get ready to do one I'll read it a bit more carefully and perhaps send you a question or two or three...lol. You're a genius! I just love your blog and these Pottery Barn inspired goodies you create!
ReplyDeleteYou are just incredible! I like your version so much better than PB's because, as you said, the design looks less crowded. I have never tried the iron on paper, but you've inspired me to give it a try someday. And isn't fabric glue just the handiest thing?
ReplyDeleteWow! I love them! Your right, great for the season.
ReplyDeleteStunning. you never fail to amaze me with your talent...
ReplyDeleteWow! I am impressed by your sewing skills AND your computer skills to get the image how you wanted it for the pillow. It is just a wonderful pillow. I have gone to envelope pillow covers like you have for the same reason...less storage space needed (and less pillow forms). I saw your post over at Debbie Doos Magazine Copy Cat Challenge.
ReplyDeleteI like yours better than PB's. You just never quit getting inspired and doing something about it! It's great!
ReplyDeletewow, your pillow is so much better than the pb version- they should be copying you! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so fun. I love this. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely beautiful!!! You are just so talented and creative Debbie and I like it tons better than the PB one. :-) Thank you so much for sharing this with us at Inspiration Friday this week!
ReplyDeleteVanessa
Debbie, you need to start an Etsy shop, I'd buy everything...honest!!! you create the most amazing things. and this latest pillow is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pillow, Debbie!
ReplyDeleteDeb, that looks great. You are a pillow producing mama.
ReplyDeleteI just think you have some awesome skills there Debbie! Too bad you could not mass produce your pillows, because they would be flying off the shelves! Thanks for sharing with the magazine copy cat challenge! LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteYou are the pillow master! I love the color combinations you've chosen.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, this one is the best one yet. Can't beat the yellow and blue for summer and you're right, I think PB's too crowded and yours looks much better. I have a new blog and a question for you. Can you come visit me and tell me what I have purchased at GW? Don't know for sure if it's flow blue or now, but I thought if anyone could tell, certainly you could, Thanks, Debbie
ReplyDeleteMagnifique, Debbie! That's a really lovely pillow! Just like there is no such thing as "too much ice-cream", there are never "too many pillows", right?
ReplyDeleteLovely! I like your version better than PB's.
ReplyDeleteThe pillows are beautiful. The bird must be realistic, the cat is waiting near by. Smiles, Susie
ReplyDeleteWhat a great pillow, I would have thought it was from PB! I love the ribbon, matches the little bird on the cage. I love changing seasons with pillows. Such an easy way for a new look. Like you I have tons of pillows.
ReplyDeleteI see Baby Kitty approves of the new look!

ReplyDeleteAnother beauty! Love the blue with yellow accents.
ReplyDeleteHope you are enjoying beautiful days out in your garden. ~ Sarah
What a cute pillow cover! I like yours so much better then the pottery barns version!
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I love pillows too. Question: Do you do anything to sanitize pillow forms you get at Goodwill? I'm always a little leary of buying something like that there. This one is really beautiful!
ReplyDeletegorgeous! I have a pillow obsession (aka problem) too. I started selling mine so it's under control....for now. I love what you have created. beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou can never have too many throw pillows! Your pillow turned out so beautifully!! I love it. ~ Jamie
ReplyDeleteWonderful pillow! Wow, you can give PB a run for their money! Don't stop making them, they are awesome!
ReplyDeleteWow...Debbie, I'm so impressed. That is just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour orange kitty looks so much like my Marmalade! :)
You are truly the Princess of Pillows or the Queen of Cushions. Why even think about stopping doing something you're so good at?
ReplyDeleteI certainly like the Pottery Barn pillows, but yours are much better I must say, best finish of the image, better color, and its just perfect, but must special you did it yourself and that's where the heart is. congratulations, I love your pillow.
ReplyDeleteWow I love that, isn't Graphics Fairy wonderful? I 'liked' you on Facebook and followed you on linky followers. Please link this post with me at Wow Us Wednesday, ok?
ReplyDeleteGah! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI'd love for you to come link it up at my party going on now! http://www.salttree.net/2012/06/open-call-tuesdays-7-giveaway.html#comment-form
You are amazing. Pillow looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThese are absolutely beatiful. The colour of the ribbons bring out the bird and cage so perfectly. I am obsessed by birds and cages I can't get enough!

ReplyDeleteI am *especially* fond of the green birdcage one - oh my word.
Let me know if you want to "part" with it! ♥ ♥ ♥
Oh my goodness! Your pillow turned out just beautifully! I absolutely love it and am inspired to get my sewing machine out! My throw pillows are so worn and tired. I needed this inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Best Wishes and Blessings,
Amanda
Gotta say, I like yours better than PB's. Love the name of your website too. I am also a plate addict. Come from a long line of plate addicts.
ReplyDeleteJust as many others have commented, the first thing I thought was that I love your pillow way more than the PB ones....I envy your design and sewing skills! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou knocked this one out of the park! I adore the graphics, and whatever you do, don't stop making and sharing fabulous things :)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Tanya
I like your version better than the Pottery Barn original! Great job!
ReplyDeleteAfter scrolling down for what seemed an eon I think you can safely say we all love your birdcage/canary pillow.
ReplyDeleteI was so awed I couldn't think how to save it for a minute. Then you also provided the graphic for the transfer already. Thank you so much. That is so incredible I'm so happy. I'm a bird nut and a big fan of Graphics Fairy so making that pillow is going to be a highlight for me.
Just have to get sewing machine working again. Might just have to get less favorite one out if I'm too impatient. Thanks so much for showing us how to make this. Awesome girl.
You never cease to amaze me. I will be featuring this project tonight at my Swing into Spring party that opens at 8pm EST. Please stop by and grab an I've Been Featured button. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWow, love it. Looks better than the original.
ReplyDeleteOh I love ... Thanks to share !
ReplyDeleteI love the blue bird cage is it for sale and if so how much. Thank you. Dee:)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you like it, Dee! No...I have decided not to sell any of my projects. I am my own worst critic and would worry about imperfections! Thanks so much for your interest, though!...hugs...Debbie
DeleteVery lovely bird cage and bird. I would love some of those, so long as my cat doesn't mistake them for the real thing!
ReplyDelete-Jon
Love it. I need to copy it for my bed. I already have a birdcage pillow that I found at Marshalls (brown with a white birdcage) and the color will be perfect. Love when things speak to you like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Karen
