As each holiday rolls around, I always pull out one of my favorite possessions…my grandmother’s dough bowl…and look for new ways to decorate it for the occasion. This Christmas is no exception, so I thought I would show you four different ways I have been trying.
The first is very traditional…filled with a red candle and simple shiny ornaments. I know the neutrals are popular now, but red and green still say Christmas to me!
I love the way this one looks at night! It just glows in the candlelight!
The little star ornaments add just the perfect touch of whimsy, I think! And can you believe it…the ornaments came from Publix!
This arrangements smells heavenly…tangerines and cinnamon stick wrapped candles on a bed of almonds! The almonds were half price after Christmas last year and have been such a wonderful filler all year!
The candles were also inexpensive to do using cinnamon sticks from the Hispanic spices section of Publix for only $3.39 for a 12 ounce bag! Woo hoo! The tutorial can be found here.
What do you think? Somehow the combination of tangerines and cinnamon sticks just brings back childhood memories of Christmas!
Miss Isabella says this one is her favorite since it is orange…her favorite color in addition to black and white!
Here’s another look…without a candle this time…pinecones, moss rocks and mercury glass acorns. The moss rocks came for the Dollar Tree with 4 or 5 in a package…a bargain…and the pinecones came from my yard.
The mercury glass acorns were at Walmart last year and are still some of my favorite ornaments!
And finally…a sparkly-warkly look that is a little more elegant…silver and gold starring the Dollar Tree snow birds I made last year (tutorial here) and a pillar candle wrapped with a jeweled snowflake from Target.

ReplyDeleteI think that YOU will use the last one, Debbie, the elegant sparkly one. For me, I'd go with the oranges and cinnamon...I lean a little in the prim direction and that style just "speaks" to me.

ReplyDeleteI've got to go with #1 or #4. The shiny colors in the first one are so Christmas-y, but the 4th one is sparkly and elegant.
Sparkly shiny things do it for me.
But the ornaments would have to be shatterproof at my house -
some one(s) think they are toys!

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have your grandmother's dough bowl. I have one that I've had since the 1980s. It was given to me by an elderly friend. He said that none of his children would appreciate it. I decorate it for the seasons, too. I prefer the one with the mercury glass acorns.

Oh my, how to choose a favorite?? I love ALL of them, but especially the red & green one & the moss one with the mercury glass. I had a dough bowl at one time, YEARS ago! I need to get another one.

Well, Debbie, no question - love the acorns (I have some, too!) and moss balls - gorgeous and peaceful! But coming in second is the shiney red & green balls with the red candle - so traditional! They are are lovely, though! Linda

Very pretty! Your unorthodox sources for decor are totally the way to go! My grandmother has one of the most beautiful nativity scenes I've ever seen and she got it from Ukrops (The Publix of Virgina, that sadly got bought out by Giant Foods a little over a year ago...)

For my own decor taste this year, I'd have to agree with Isabella...the creamy ivory candles, natural nuts and oranges would fit in perfectly here! Thank you for reminding us that we can use our heirlooms in our decorating schemes giving us fond memories at the hoilday season!

ReplyDeleteGreat ideas and so economical! I bought a dough bowl from Kohl's recently (I wasn't lucky enough to inherit one)and I haven't used it for Christmas. I'm betting you went with the cinnamon and oranges. It looks beautiful and probably smells even better. Somehow food items seem to go best in those bowls. Thanks so much for the ideas.
