Four Ways to Decorate a Dough Bowl for Christmas

022As each holiday rolls around, I always pull out one of my favorite possessions…my grandmother’s dough bowl…and look for new ways to decorate it for the occasion. This Christmas is no exception, so I thought I would show you four different ways I have been trying.

019The first is very traditional…filled with a red candle and simple shiny ornaments.  I know the neutrals are popular now, but red and green still say Christmas to me!

007 I love the way this one looks at night! It just glows in the candlelight!

011The little star ornaments add just the perfect touch of whimsy, I think! And can you believe it…the ornaments came from Publix!

025 This arrangements smells heavenly…tangerines and cinnamon stick wrapped candles on a bed of almonds! The almonds were half price after Christmas last year and have been such a wonderful filler all year!

033The candles were also inexpensive to do using cinnamon sticks from the Hispanic spices section of Publix for only $3.39 for a 12 ounce bag! Woo hoo! The tutorial can be found here.

041What do you think? Somehow the combination of tangerines and cinnamon sticks just brings back childhood memories of Christmas!

106 Miss Isabella says this one is her favorite since it is orange…her favorite color in addition to black and white!

062 Here’s another look…without a candle this time…pinecones, moss rocks and mercury glass acorns. The moss rocks came for the Dollar Tree with 4 or 5 in a package…a bargain…and the pinecones came from my yard.

048 The mercury glass acorns were at Walmart last year and are still some of my favorite ornaments!

079And finally…a sparkly-warkly look that is a little more elegant…silver and gold starring the Dollar Tree snow birds I made last year (tutorial here) and a pillar candle wrapped with a jeweled snowflake from Target.

pageThere you have it…four very different looks for a Christmas dough bowl that run the gamut form simple to sparkly. Do you have a favorite?  I think I know which one I am going with! Can you guess?

  1. Oh I love all of them, but my favorite is the silver, moss and pinecone dough bowl, but I adore the cinnamon one too. Great job and how fun!

  2. What a pretty variety of looks for this dough bowl! I do love the pinecone moss look. Sure wish I still had my dough bowl from the "country" look back in the 80's!

  6. All are lovely, Ddebbie, but hard as it is to pick, I think I like the last one best, No, wait, maybe the first one. Hmmm, see, hard to choose!

  7. So Debbie, which one did you decide on? I love them all, they are all so different but I am thinking about how you have decorated your house already and I am thinking either the first one or third one.

  8. Debbie I LOVE them all but the red, green, and gold is my favorite!!

  9. First of all the dough bowl is just wonderful! Each one is beautiful, who says a girl can't change it up whenever the mood strikes!! xo

  10. They are all beautiful, but one of them screams my name...the last one. I love silver, gold and sparkle!

  11. I prefer the red/green (I'm using a lot of that this year, too!), and I think that is the one you will choose; however, I like the silver/green moss balls, too!

  12. I love them all, but my favorite is the one with the mercury glass acorns. So beautiful!

  13. Wonderful ideas! I love the second one... very chic. I might have to copy it! xo

  14. I think that YOU will use the last one, Debbie, the elegant sparkly one. For me, I'd go with the oranges and cinnamon...I lean a little in the prim direction and that style just "speaks" to me.

    Hugs,
    Pam

  15. All four are beautiful Debbie! I am wondering if I should throw the dough bowl in the truck when we leave for the lake Friday. hmmmm...

  16. All four look great Debbie, maybe I like the silver one best. No the one on the bottom right. :)))
    Have a nice week.

  17. Oh how pretty Debbie. I love them all. Each one is so pretty and all are so different. I couldn't pick a favorite. Thanks tons for joining TTT. Hugs, Marty

  18. Debbie,
I've got to go with #1 or #4. The shiny colors in the first one are so Christmas-y, but the 4th one is sparkly and elegant.
Sparkly shiny things do it for me.
But the ornaments would have to be shatterproof at my house -
some one(s) think they are toys!

  19. All are beautiful.

I would probably like the traditional red and green because the dough bowl is old.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love them all but I would probably go with the traditional red, green and white. Still I do love oranges and cinnamon! I am going to keep my eye out for a dough bowl. hugs, Linda

  21. Each "look" truly has something different to offer. I really love the oranges and cinnamon sticks! So toasty! andrea@townandprairie

  22. How wonderful that you have your grandmother's dough bowl. I have one that I've had since the 1980s. It was given to me by an elderly friend. He said that none of his children would appreciate it. I decorate it for the seasons, too. I prefer the one with the mercury glass acorns.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Debbie! Oh, how pretty each one is! I'm like you, though, I love me some red and green! I need a dough bowl so much! ;)
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia :)

  24. Oh my, how to choose a favorite?? I love ALL of them, but especially the red & green one & the moss one with the mercury glass. I had a dough bowl at one time, YEARS ago! I need to get another one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. They're all gorgeous....but I am rather taken with the silver acorns, moss and pinecones. My grandmother had a dough bowl.....gosh I wonder whatever happened to it?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love those acorns! Everything looks just wonderful and I love that old dough bowl! xo Diana

  27. Eenie, meanie, miney.....it's so hard to choose! It's between the red & green and the pinecones and tangerines. Although the moss and mercury glass is a nice combination, too!

    I'm a Gemini. I can't make up my mind. :@

  28. All of them are beautiful. I'm betting you go with the pretty tangerines and pinecones this year. I'm so jealous of all of the fun you are having with that wonderful dough bowl. Everything you put in it looks great! laurie

  31. I had to smile when I read through this one. I've been doing the same thing with my dough bowl ~ playing around with different looks. ;-)
Each one of your designs is beautiful, but my favorite is the silver acorns, pine cones, and moss. ~ Sarah

  32. Well, Debbie, no question - love the acorns (I have some, too!) and moss balls - gorgeous and peaceful! But coming in second is the shiney red & green balls with the red candle - so traditional! They are are lovely, though! Linda

  33. They are all beautiful Debbie. I couldn't pick out a favorite...I love them all.

  34. Wow! So hard to pick a favorite, they are all beautiful! But, hands down, the acorn and moss balls arrangement is a winner for me! I can imagine the cinnamon one with the oranges smells heavenly! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love every one of these arrangements. Each is beautiful in its own way. I guess if I have to choose a favorite it would be the silver and gold. The sparkle got to me! Your photos made a beautiful mosaic. Your Christmas posts have been beautiful........

  37. Deb love love your dough bowl, in fact I covet it, hehe!! I think my favorite is of the cinnamon candles and oranges, it just goes with the fill of the bowl. I would probably have to use granny smith apples in mine but I love the oranges and nuts, it reminds me of my Grandma!! xo Kathysue

  38. I adore the very first one with the red candle and shiny ornaments. That one truly says Christmas to me...the Christmas of my childhood. But they are all beautiful and either one of them I'm sure will look great in your lovely home!

    ReplyDelete
  39. so happy to see this post. love your ideas -- the moss rocks, mercury glass ornaments, and pinecones is my favorite -- that combo of natural elements with a hint of glam. I need to make time for the dollar store -- for stocking stuffers too, plus these moss rocks!

  40. All four designs are beautiful. They each stand out for different reasons. I might be partial to the orange and cinnamon look, but I can't commit to that. ;)

  41. Very pretty! Your unorthodox sources for decor are totally the way to go! My grandmother has one of the most beautiful nativity scenes I've ever seen and she got it from Ukrops (The Publix of Virgina, that sadly got bought out by Giant Foods a little over a year ago...)

  43. Debbie,
All your vignettes in the dough bowl are stunning! For my own decor taste this year, I'd have to agree with Isabella...the creamy ivory candles, natural nuts and oranges would fit in perfectly here! Thank you for reminding us that we can use our heirlooms in our decorating schemes giving us fond memories at the hoilday season!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  47. Moss balls for a dollar???? No way. Love them all but my fav is that one.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Great ideas and so economical! I bought a dough bowl from Kohl's recently (I wasn't lucky enough to inherit one)and I haven't used it for Christmas. I'm betting you went with the cinnamon and oranges. It looks beautiful and probably smells even better. Somehow food items seem to go best in those bowls. Thanks so much for the ideas.
