Easy Faux Succulent Pumpkin

Have you noticed? I've been seeing lots of succulents mixed with pumpkins in the fall decor this year. Some have been real (and beautiful, I might add) but I decided that I wanted to mine to be faux. That way I don't want to have to worry about little hands or little paws getting into trouble! And I have to say how surprised I was to discover how easy it was to create this beauty!

Here's what you will need:
  • Carvable craft pumpkin (On sale just about everywhere but I found mine at Michael's for $10)
  • Sharpie pen
  • Assortment of faux succulents (Most of them also came from Michael's and were on sale in the fall floral section. The one that looks like long beads came from Hobby Lobby. I spent a total of about $20.)
  • Floral foam oasis
  • X-Acto knife

Miss Iris says it's super-duper easy but please be careful with the sharp knives!

And here's what you will do:
  1. Using the Sharpie, draw the outline of the section of the pumpkin top that you will remove.
  2. With the X-Acto knife, follow the line that you drew, cutting as far into the pumpkin as possible. Give it a hard tug to remove the top once you have finished.
  3. Press the floral foam into the pumpkin cavity, filling in empty spaces as needed. I used an old steak knife to cut away and even up the foam at the top. Next, begin to add the faux succulents. Several of them had multiple stems which I separated and used individually
  4. Continue to fill in with succulents until your pumpkin top is completely covered.
I used shades of green mixed in with a few hints of pink...a surprising combination for fall, I think, but I like it! My total spent...about $30. Not bad considering that I saw them on Etsy for double that.

And...taaa daaa!...here it is! I love the softer colors and the fact that it's faux will allow me to use it again!

And maybe my favorite part...the way the little string of pearls succulents trail down the sides of the pumpkin!

It looks really pretty with the  pumpkin and succulent bowl filler that I found on sale at Hobby Lobby! Hmmm....are you seeing a theme emerging? And stay tuned because I have a new wreath to show you, too!

I have not received any compensation for mentioning the stores where I found my supplies. I just liked them and thought you might like them, too! :-)

  3. Hi Debbie,
I absolutely love your beautiful fall pumpkin! I used to not care about succulents but I'm finding that I really do love them mixed in with flowers and greenery. I really do love using non-standard colors for Fall although I love the typical fall colors as well. It's fun to experiment with something totally different. I made my first pink sunflower and pink succulent Fall wreath this year. I purchased those two items from Michaels. I'm sure you noticed the gorgeous pink sunflowers with the glittered centers? Just stunning. I hope you have a lovely Fall season and Thanksgiving!

    Regards,
    Sandi
