How to Make a Pillow from a Placemat for Under $5.00

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT How to Make a Pillow from a PlacematI’ve been eyeing those cute Christmas throw pillows with trees tied to the tops of a vintage truck or car…always red, of course! They remind me of choosing the perfect tree with my Daddy and my sister and then tying it on the roof of the station wagon for the trip home. So as I was passing the holiday placemats in Target, it should come as no surprise that one of them really spoke to me! It said…I need to be a pillow! lol The graphic was perfect and those fringed edges were just so sassy! And all it took was one look and I knew it would be super easy, too! And best of all, it was under $5.00!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Pillow from a Placemat tutorialThe first requirement for turning a placemat into a pillow by my super-easy method is this…it must be lined or have a backing. If it is a single layer of fabric, it will not work. They are relatively easy to find, though, so be on the lookout!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Pillow from a Placemat suppliesHere's what you will need:
  • A double-sided or lined placemat (Mine came from Target at $4.50)
  • Poly fiberfill for stuffing
  • Seam ripper
  • Needle and thread

  1. Using the seam ripper, carefully open the seam about 5 or 6 inches along the bottom edge. You may have to open both the top stitching and the actual seam.
  2. Stuff the fiberfill into the pillow until you are satisfied with the fullness.
  3. Using a needle and thread, stitch it closed. If you prefer, you could machine stitch, but I could hand stitch in the amount of time it would take me to set up my portable machine.
And that’s it! I hardly even dare to call it a tutorial!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Christmas Jacket PillowAnd here’s another fun way to create a pillow from something unexpected…my CHRISTMAS JACKET PILLOW!  A trip to the thrift store can yield a fun assortment of possibilities!
And stay tuned because the Christmas-ing is just getting started at my house and I have lots more to share!
