Yaay! I’ve been working on my Christmas mantel for a few days and it’s finally finished! I have a confession…I am really very traditional then it comes to the holidays and Christmas is no exception. For me RED + GREEN = CHRISTMAS and there is a generous helping of both on my mantel this year. Just pile on lots of greenery, add a boxwood wreath, galvanized lanterns with striped burlap ribbon and a fun collection of family stockings and you have it!
I always start with the garland when building my Christmas mantel. I especially love this one because it sports a variety of greenery plus some natural elements such as twigs and pine cones…perfect! I like to layer in some extra greenery and a few berries as well for some pops of red.
My wreath this year is a simple one…boxwood with a more red berries sprinkled in…love it! It’s one of Martha Stewart’s creations from Home Depot. After Christmas I will remove the berries and keep it on the mantel. I topped it off with a red striped burlap ribbon to give it a more festive look.
The same ribbon is repeated in the form of bows topping my favorite galvanized farmhouse lanterns. And of course, the candle must be red!
Our family stockings add some whimsy to the mantel. We actually found them at Walmart’s website for a very reasonable price. Can you guess which one is mine? Could it be the one with the cat? lol Or did Granny give it away?
Here’s a look at the whole mantel. I’m really enjoying decorating with the grands in mind. They are beside themselves with excitement this year! I think it’s the first year that everyone really understands…especially the four year old, who has already hidden under the table and eaten half of the chocolate in his Advent calendar! 
So I found this one…completely non-edible and still fun! The grands have already worked out their own system for taking turns moving the candy cane each day. Isn’t he a cutie? I found him at Home Depot. I replaced the thin gold thread with jute twine and hot glued it in place at either end because I know that candy cane is going to get a work out!

When teaching Pre~Schoolers years ago, I had a fabric Advent Calendar
that had a mouse that the children took turns moving each day!!!
(Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse!)
Miss Kitty appears to be mesmerized by something other than the fire in the fireplace!!!

ReplyDeleteDebbie, it is just perfect! I love the traditional look and the red and green is Christmas for me also! Those stockings are really cute and yes the 'cat' and 'granny' gave it away! I want to get an advent calendar without candy also. I will have to check out Home Depot for sure. Tiger wants a little tree in his room but Mom says no because he can't keep it clean enough to have one. So Grandma has been good and not bought him one, maybe next year. He does have a jingle bell tree I gave him. Can't wait to see more. I'm almost done with my decorations.

ReplyDeleteI love your traditional Christmas decor. Your garland is so lush, is it a single garland or did you enhance it? How fun to have your grandchildren around to celebrate this holiday with. I am sure they will all be so very excited. I love your wreath from the Home Depot, I actually bought three of these myself and ended up returning them for some less expensive ones, but now I think perhaps I should go back and buy them! DeleteHi Debbie, I'm right with you on the Red plus Green = Christmas theory. I do have some other pops of color, but Red and Green are by far the predominant color. I'm really partial to that lantern you have. What a versatile piece that can be dressed up for just about any occasion. Thanks for giving us a peek into your home.
