How to Create a Fall Dough Bowl in Three Easy Steps

Yaay! It’s officially fall and I am finally getting a little decorating done! I always like to start with a very special favorite of mine…my grandmother’s dough bowl…and this year is no different! However, this time I thought I would share my thought process with you, too, including a little secret that is always at the bottom of the bowl!

And here it is…so easy that I am almost embarrassed to call it a decorating secret…start with a layer of dried beans! They serve as an anchor and, in the case of my dough bowl, give me a level surface to work with. That way, nothing gets lost in the deeper part of the bowl.

Next, I layer in the leaves and berries. The stems can be hidden in the beans and are out of the way. If you are opting to add candles, this would also be the point at which you would add them. The beans anchor them and keep them stable.

Finally, add the pumpkins and gourds or other natural elements that you are using, such as pine cones or acorns. You can also fill in with a few extra leaves or berries where needed.

Kitty And Miss Kitty says to stay tuned because I found some cute little burlap pumpkins and I can’t wait to show you what I am doing with them!

  6. What a great idea to use dried beans! I've always used scrunched up newspaper or paper towels in the bottom of bowl arrangements but it never worked very well to secure things. I'll definitely be trying this idea out. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Great Post- I love sharing this kind of idea-and convincing others that it really is so easy...MAKING PRETTY. I often think the most dramatic creations are the simplest. and whenever possible I try to transition the fall look into Christmas..removing almost blatant FALL accents and filling in with a little shimmer and shine or the Christmas colors..sometimes it's taking out a pumpkin and replacing it with Candles..or ornaments..E A S Y ..thanks for reminding us it does not have to be expensive or difficult!

  9. Wouldn't coffee beans be nice to use as a base? Color is a rich brown and would smell good too!

  10. Made me want to look for a dough bowl someplace other than Pottery Barn. I always keep my eyes open in antique stores but have only found ones that are way to big. So happy day - I just found one on eBay which is the right size and is sold with a naturally shed deer antler. Yikes. So excited to try this centerpiece though :)
