It’s been very busy around here with lots of yard work and some closet reorganization, but I finally had a chance to finish a project that I started earlier…my pair of vintage French ticking pillows! And they are now in their new place…the black and white toile guest bedroom!
And in case you missed it, here is the first vintage French ticking pillow that I made. I love the contrast of the colors in the Camembert label with the black and white ticking! You will find a complete tutorial for the pillow, including the cheese label graphic, by clicking here.
And here is the graphic that I used for this pillow…another vintage French Camembert label. I love the fact that it is a little tattered and torn! I have flipped it so that you can use it as an iron-on transfer. Here’s what you do:- First, print it on iron-on transfer paper (I use Avery brand for light fabrics) and cut out the circular label.
- Next, follow the directions on the package and apply it to a smaller square of fabric. I used cream-colored suiting fabric and left it unfinished so it would ravel.
- Then stitch the smaller square to the front of the pillow cover.
- Finish the cover by stitching the front and back together. I use an envelope-style closure on the back (you can find a tutorial here) to allow for easy removal and storage.
- Finally, pop in a pillow form (Mine is a down form from Goodwill for under $3.00).
And here they are! I love them...and they were both so much fun to make! The envelope closure will make the covers easy to remove and store…although I don’t think I will be changing pillows any time soon! 
Here’s what the room looked like before…with ruffled toile pillows on the bed and the little rooster pillow for a splash of red.
I can still add the little rooster pillow when my grandson is not around if I want to. And yes…I still need to do some more de-ruffling before he comes over. I’m working on that. 
The staff, however, is not at all concerned about that. They decided to check out the new look for nap-ability. It seems to be passing! Stay tuned because there are a few more small changes coming soon!

ReplyDeleteThe whole room is so pretty, Debbie. Your new pillows are the perfect addition. I went into one of our guest rooms yesterday to do a quick cleaning - company is coming. I realized that one spot on the bed is perfectly covered with cat hair. It's Sophie's favorite spot. :)

I'd like to redo our guest rooms, but can't seem to get off the starting line. Perhaps this will inspire me to do something. '-)

ReplyDeleteWe're on SS so we get paid once a month and since last Sept I think we've had one month that wasn't a 5 weeker between paydays, ouch. It's hard to make my ink cartridges last for 5 weeks when there is so much inspiration on blog land, first of which is your blog. I've never seen a project I didn't like since I found you last year.
You are so generous to share the images reversed so we can make the projects quicker and easier. Especially for this digitally challenged person. Tomorrow is our payday so I'll be at JoAnn's or HL to get the ticking. I make my pillow covers with envelope closure so I can change them when the mood strikes, it's so easy to do.
I don't really measure, just put the fabric down, put the pillow on it, fold the fabric over side facing me, pin it, cut it, sew. Much quicker and so much easier. I just have to be sure to sew any embellishments on it before I sew the pillow cover up.
I get the biggest kick out of your kitties. They're so cute. How's BK doing? Back soon Happy days

ReplyDeleteLove the pillows. I have been looking for some ideas to use the fabric from some rooster theme drapes that I found at a thrift store. The ticking really makes the rooster pop. The envelope closure will be real handy to change out the pillows with the seasons. I will be working on my pillows as soon as I get around to buying some oil for my sewing machine. Thank you for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI live down under in Australia and black toile is hard to come by - I am loving yours, and I think it looks masculine enough - I'd leave the room alone and let your grandson enjoy it! Also your cats are gorgeous - love the way they nap so beautifully on the bed! Makes me want to get a cat again!
