Pumpkins and Bittersweet...My Fall Dough Bowl

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fall Dough Bowl 2012Have you realized that Thanksgiving is three weeks from today? It’s time for me to start planning my tablescape and working on possible centerpieces! My favorite element to use as the star of my Thanksgiving decor is my dough bowl…a cherished heirloom from my grandmother! This year I have decided to fill it with my favorites…old-fashioned traditional pumpkins!

Kitty on monkey bars It’s a beautiful day…warmer and sunny after days of chilly, overcast weather…and our scheduled co-host Miss Kitty has decided to play hooky and have a little romp on the monkey bars instead! Looks like we will have to proceed without her!

Long Stemmed Pumpkin The central element of the arrangement is this wonderful long-stemmed pumpkin that I found during our family visit to the pumpkin farm. Love it!

Fall Dough Bowl I have surrounded it with faux bittersweet, dried magnolia pods and acorns…

Mini Pumpkins …plus these cute little mini-pumpkins with their fabulous little tendrils! I couldn’t resist them and came home with a stash of these from the pumpkin farm as well!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fall Dough Bowl Nothing says fall and Thanksgiving to me like traditional orange pumpkins! Now just add a little mini Indian corn on the side and a blue and white double happiness jar filled with eucalyptus and there you have it!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Dough Bowls Here’s a look at some of the other ways I have filled my dough bowl in the past, as well as my current centerpiece. Since my dough bowl doesn’t have a flat bottom, I put dried black-eye peas in the bottom when I use candles to help anchor them. However, this year I decided to omit the candles and go for all natural elements.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fall Dough Bowl 2012I really like the contrast of the blue and white with the pops of orange…a little non-traditional color  combination…

Hutch for Fall …that I have used in the rest of my dining room as well. You can see more here.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Fall Dough Bowl 2012 Here’s one last look at my dough bowl…ready for Thanksgiving! Now…I need to start thinking about my tablescape! I already have a few little ideas in my head! How about you? Are you starting to plan your Thanksgiving table?

Let us not forget to keep our friends in the Northeast in our thoughts as some will be facing a Thanksgiving unlike any that they have ever had...facing loss and destruction after Sandy. Remember to lift them up in your prayers and help them in any way that you can to pull through this difficult time.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed a little peek at my dough bowl! Please visit these wonderful bloggers and their beautiful blogs to see what they are up to and to find a list of this week’s participants!

  1. Love the filled dough bowl. Lucky you to find that long stemmed pumpkin. They are usually broken off. Your dining room looks great.

  2. Debbie, I like the way you filled the dough bowl. The long stemmed pumpkins are so interesting. Be certain to save those stems once the pumpkin is ready to toss. You can use them for velvet pumpkins next season. It's not often you find good long stems. ;-)
I started putting up the Halloween decor this afternoon and planning my centerpiece. Like you, I like to use my wooden dough bowl or some other wooden element. Not certain what I'll do this year. Thanks for sharing your centerpiece. Enjoy the season.........Sarah

  4. Its gorgeous Deb, and I also always try to look for the pumpkins with the longest stems too. But yours is a winner for sure cause that is one long stem. LOL I love your magnolia pods. I don't have any of those but sure wish I did. BTW, sorry I did not get your goodies out before we went to the mountains. They are on the way being shipped out tomorrow. :) xxoo

  7. Hi Debbie. Love your dough bowl. I have one that is hiding in the old barn-garage. Hope I can find it. It certainly lends itself to the festive season with the pumpkins, and I love the touch of blue also..Happy Thursday..Judy

  8. Hi Debbie. I love this and your dough bowl. You always put together the prettiest vignettes.
I feel completely like a goof. I saw this snap on FB and called you Barb! :) Forgive me, I've been eating too much chocolate I think.
    Be a sweetie,

  9. This looks wonderful, Debbie...I really like the one with the candles. Never thought of using coffee beans to secure the candles. I have an old dough bowl I got on Ebay a few months ago. The only thing it has held is a rolling pin! lol! I am seriously creatively challenged! Thanks for the ideas!

    Jane

  10. There's something so beautiful about bringing the out-doors in. I love this years' bowl with the acorns and leaves. So, so pretty. Miss Kitty is the Queen of the Castle today, I see. Dare I say I am starting to think about Christmas decorating since our Thanksgiving is behind us. Deb

  12. Deb, I love doughbowls and to think you have your Grandmothers makes it that much more special. I have always wanted one, but to have a family heirloom like this is beyond wonderful. Love the long stemmed pumpkin, he is amazing and perfect as the center point in your centerpiece.
Just this morning I sat down with pencil and paper and figured out what I would like to do for my Tday table, hopefully it will come to fruition!!
I just did a post on the past few Tday tables and it actually forced me to start thinking about my own for this year. I love how that works sometimes. We write for others and it winds up inspiring us!!
    Happy first day of Novemember!

  14. I think I like this year's dough bowl the best. I happen to have one just like it from my own grandmother. I will have to pull it out and use it for Thanksgiving now that I see yours all done up and fabulous. It looks so good with your blue and white too!

  17. The dough bowl looks glorious! It really is beautiful.
Do the cats ever 'mistake' the acorns or smaller items for toys? I think that unless I glued them all down, I'd have pieces scattered everywhere. And any wonderfully long-stemmed pumpkin - well, that stem would make one a perfect handle to carry with.

  23. Debbie,
I adore your dough bowl as centerpiece!!! Knowing it belonged to your Grandmother makes it precious, indeed! The use of natural elements is stunning! Hadn't seen dried magnolia pods before...wonderful texture! We will be GOING to our son and daughter~in~laws for Thanksgiving this year. For our friends and families on the East Coast, Thanksgiving will hold a deeper meaning for them...thankful for the gift of life and things that are still useable. My prayers continue for them in their aftermath. Have a blessed weekend!
    Fondly,
    pat
P.S. Miss Kitty...you come down from there before you get hurt!!! Lovely lady!!!
