Thinking About Thanksgiving

036 I have a confession…I am already thinking about my Thanksgiving tablescape!  I find myself looking for inspiration in my favorite catalogs and magazines and playing with some elements on my table. Are you?

003 However, I already know I will be all alone on this post since this is my illustrious co-host’s favorite time of year. He stays glued to the window watching the leaves blow. He has been doing this every fall since he was a little guy!

PB antlerFirst stop for inspiration…Pottery Barn! I have another confession…even though I really am turned off by the real ones, I am really liking faux deer antlers! At Pottery Barn, they are $30 on sale…not bad! Restoration Hardware is featuring them, too…for $129…quite a hefty price by my standards!

PB Sooo….you will not believe what I found! Yes…faux deer antlers at Goodwill! Well, one at least! It had a funny metal thingy on the end that I managed to remove. Not sure what it came from, but I couldn’t argue with the price…$2.92! Woo hoo!

PB centerpiece I have also been admiring this autumnal centerpiece…also at Pottery Barn…with that striking candelabra! But it’s $129yikes! And…you need several deer antlers to achieve this look.

PB Here’s my version after finding yet another faux antler for only $6.00hmmmm. My candelabra was a flea market find two years ago for about $10 and I am afraid the price difference shows! Not doing this one!

Better-Homes-Gardens-October-2011-Magazine This cover of Better Homes and Gardens has been a favorite of mine this fall! Gotta love those white pumpkins with bittersweet…lovely!

036 And here’s my version! By the time I decided that I need more faux white pumpkins, they were nowhere to be found, so I spray-painted some of the orange ones from Walmart. Not bad, huh? I love the stem! And the pumpkins were only $5.00 each! I used ivory spray paint instead of white for a more natural look.

035 I am also starting to think about the dinnerware and linens. I found these acorn napkins on sale at the Williams-Sonoma outlet…love them!…but I don’t think they are available any more. That’s my bargain Chris Madden Felice dinnerware that I found at GW last year for $10 for a service for four…my favorite! On the table...twig placemats that I am considering.

IMG_4252And finally, here’s last year’s Thanksgiving tablescape 2010. I definitely think my burlap table runner will be back as well as the dinnerware. Beyond that…I’m still working on it. What about you? Are you starting to think about Thanksgiving?

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed a little peek at my tablescape possibilities!  Please visit these wonderful bloggers and their beautiful blogs to see what they are up to and to find a list of this week’s participants!

  1. Oh-It's looking lovely...and your knock off looks are great! Amazing what you can do, isn't it, with a little ingenuity?

When you said you were thinking about your Fall tablescape and then showed a picture of your cat I thought maybe you were headed in a whole new direction!;>)

  2. It will be beautiful Debbie!! Loving the elements. I saw that same centerpiece in PB catalog and fell in love with it.

Great buys on the faux antlers!!

  3. You sure do know where to find the deals. I have to tell you, though, I bought the antlers...with the head!!! Yup, the whole shebang. But, shhhhh. It's a Christmas surprise for somebody, and was only $35! I have to wait 'till mid January, since that's the only time we can all be together.

Once again, great ideas from you!

  4. Hi Debbie,
PB's got nothin on you! You have created lovely displays and last year's table setting is so pretty.
I buy the orange faux pumpkins and use a paint brush to paint them white.
    They always turn out lovely.

Love those antlers too. Who knew we would ever find them decor worthy! LOL!

That's funny that Baby Kitty loves to watch the leaves. I bet he'd like to be out there chasing them around.

  7. Debbie, I am thinking of Thanksgiving table settings, too since it is my turn this year to have it at my house. I have to set at least two tables. I love your napkins. I need to find some new ones. You find the best stuff out thrifting. I never have luck at GW.

  10. I love your antler finds! And your tablescape from 2010 was wonderful. We are setting picnic tables for Thanksgiving this year and eating outside. We are going to use burlap table runners, for sure! I'm really looking forward to the celebration this year! Can't wait to see what you decide to do! :)

  11. Debbie, love your faux antlers, they are fabulous. I havn't seen any of them, but I agree, the faux don't bother me, the real kind of do. lol Love your table scape and your copy cat ideas are always better than the ones they show. You amaze me. I havn't got anything organized for Thanksgiving yet, but I better get it all in gear. Thanks tons for joining TTT. Hugs, Marty

  14. Deb this looks great! I think you are well on your way to a perfect Thanksgiving table. I am with you, I bought a tablecloth on clearance last spring and started thinking about what I might do. I have a pretty good idea, it involves a color scheme of dark lime and umber, a box, artichokes and limes and maybe pewter!! Hmmm???? Always fun to see your wonderful creativity at work!! xo Kathysue

  20. Hurray on the antlers...I feel the same way about the real ones...what is the intrigue?

You have me thinking about Thanksgiving...so far it was only about which tablecloth to use! I do my best thinking when I can't sleep at night and so far it has been pretty good... the sleep that is.

Love what you did with the pumpkins, we don't grow the bittersweet here, the faux doesn't look so great. I hope yours isn't faux!!!

  22. Hi Debbie,
I love all your beautiful vignettes and knock-off centerpiece ideas!
    You have the knack girl!
We go to my brothers every year now.
He has a very large heated garage and they set up everything in there.
Our family is just too big to fit in anyone's home anymore.
I loved the pic of Baby Kitty! Lily actually chases the leaves all over our yard, especially on a windy day. It's fun to watch!

  26. I like your faux antler find...they add a little more outdoor/rustic/earthy feeling. I've never grasped onto the fantasy for the antlers myself, but when mixed in with the other elements they look great. Your 2010 table was awesome, I'm sure 2011 will be too! Your spray painted pumpkins look fab!

  27. Well time seems to be in a rush and Thanksgiving will soon be here. Shoot! We are still having nice weather here and i hope it stays that way for awhile. I am not a fan of deer antlers-fake or real-but I know most people are. I can't believe you found them so reasonable. I never have that luck. I go to Goodwill, have to drive 50 miles to get to one, and all I find are dirty stuffed toys and crook pots with no lids. It just ain't fair, but, if some one deserves to find good stuff at a good price it is you. Keep up the good work, thanks for sharing. Richard from My Old Historic House.

Your last year's tablescape is gorgeous, I adore your white china, you can change a little and use it all. Thanks for visiting my marble table and for the lovely comments. Hugs, FABBY

I'm starting to think of Thanksgiving and Christmas. It will be just me and my two babies for Thanksgiving since my husband is deployed.
    Have a wonderful day!

  32. I've been thinking about Thanksgiving, but nearly with the same focus as you have, Debbie! The white pumpkins with bittersweet have been a favorite of mine this year, too and I love the twisted gourds in both your version and PB version! Can't wait to see what you come up with !

  33. Okay, I'm starting to think you have some kind of magical powers. I cannot believe you got those faux antlers at those prices - especially this time of the year. I've been looking for some for months, and they are all sooo expensive. Your ideas are looking beautiful. I love the white pumpkins with the bittersweet. I can't start thinking about T'giving until I get these Halloween decorations back in the closet. (I'm not a multi-holiday thinker). laurie

  46. Fantastic!! I've got one pair of antlers (the real thing) that I used with my crows for Halloween by my fireplace...not sure if I want them on my table though...you understand! Love your white pumpkins and bittersweet - too cute! No, I really wasn't thinking of tablescapes for Thanksgiving at the moment (we've been trying to get ready for our Christmas Open House in two weeks, so we've sort of had Christmas on the brain!!) BUT, now that you've got us thinking.......I need to check ebay out for a Turkey Platter....been meaning to get one :) Enjoy your evening!

  48. Debbie,
YES!!! On Crooked Creek will host the annual Thanksgiving Day Feast this year. I, too, have been searching through resources for our Thanksgiving table. I won't begin doing any mock table runs until after the 15th! I'm hosting an evening for our Ladies Group...so, I'm still working towards that event at the present. Thanks for all the inspiration! I adore your addition of deer sheds!!!
    Fondly,

  55. Wonderful ideas, Debbie! I feel the same way about antlers...I'm not putting ANY dead animal's body parts on my tables...Yuck! Even *lucky* rabbits feet gross me out, not to mention raccoon caps & fox stoles. ~~shudder~~

I need to find some faux bittersweet, as they strongly discourage people from cutting & thus, spreading the real thing. I guess its pretty invasive.

Thanks for sharing all these wonderful ideas. I think I need to sign up for some of those catalogs!

    Happy Halloween!

  72. Question on the drop cloth tablecloth: any trick to getting it to feel soft? Saw them at Home Depot yesterday! Looks like linen but they are canvas. Just feels like Thanksgiving to me!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hi Cherie! The drop cloth tablecloth was easy. I just washed it three times...once with bleach and then two more times to help soften it, using fabric softener. Then I dried it in the dryer and steam ironed it. I t is not stiff after that. And...the good thing is that it is already hemmed...so It's an instant shabby tablecloth! I hope that helps...hugs...Debbie

  75. I just got done putting the Halloween decor away, so I need a week or so to start thinking about Thanksgiving. We always host 18, so I only change the tablescape every few years. Love the antlers!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Your tables are always stunning, Debbie, and I love where you are going with this one. Great elements, and I can't believe you got the dinnerware for that price. AND I adore those napkins. SO cute.

If it will make you feel any better, apparently deer shed antlers so some of the ones you see are simply from deer that have shed. I'm from a family of hunters (except Mr. Magpie) so I have the real thing, but I also have some faux ones. I'm betting the metal thingy is the same thing that's on mine which was used to attach it to foam in an arrangement and/or to attach it to a swag.

I love what you did with the pumpkins. They look stunning. GREAT job. Were they real ones or faux that you painted?

And that precious Baby Kitty looking at his leaves. That kitty boy just tugs my heartstrings. Love him! Love you, too!

  80. I'm absolutely thinking about my tablescape, except I'll be decorating my kitchen island since most of Thanksgiving day will be spent at my parents'. I have 2 smallish-medium pumpkins that I got for free at a fair last weekend, and if I can find my cardboard and tissue paper turkey (I know it sounds cheap, but believe it or not, it's so darn cute), then I think I'll have alot to work with. I'll put down a Fall-themed paper tablecover and the gourds and turkey. Some battery tealight candles would set it off more, so I'll be using those, too. I'm on a budget since I'm planning a Christmas Open-house gathering, but these few details should make me feel even more excited about Thanksgiving. Also, have you ever thought about spray-painting your candelabra to a more rustic hue? I bet you'd have a different feeling about it if you did. Your tablescape from last year is very, very pretty, warm, and welcoming. I really adore your blog. Thank you for such thoughtful posts.. and pictures of your kitties. They're so darn cute!
