A Thanksgiving Realization...or...Pie à la Mom!

I am repeating a post from about three years ago in honor of my sweet daughter's birthday today! Happy birthday, honey! I love you....Mom

It is now official...my job is done! I can now live the rest of my life in peace. Thanksgiving dinner was at my daughter's home this year for the first time. I can hardly believe the words as I see them appearing on my screen, but it is true. Those of you who are the parents of older children will understand. You spend many years worrying what will happen if, God forbid, something should happen to you. They are almost there...not quite...inching toward adulthood....ever so slowly. Now, at last, I think she has crossed the finish line and I can uncross my fingers. Today is the day that it happened. How do I know? Just look at this pie! Is this not the most beautiful apple pie you have ever seen? She baked it from scratch, crust and all! This is no ordinary pie...it's a miracle!

This pie was baked by the child who used to wear her crinoline in the front yard because she was convinced that it was a tutu...that same little girl who poured out an entire bottle of shampoo in the tub for a very bubbly tea party. This pie is the creation of the teenager who kept a supply of toilet paper under her bed so that she could crawl out of the window at night and roll the neighbor's yard....the one who spilled pink nail polish on the carpet beside her bed and didn't tell me for three days. Yes, that person is the same person who baked this pie! And now when I see her in her beautiful home with her wonderful husband and my sweet grandson, I know my job is done. Of course, she will still ask me for advice and she may or may not take it. But she has her own family now. She is a grown-up woman. Yes, my job is done ...and the proof is in this pie!

Since this post was written, they have blessed me with two more little grandsons and I continue to be amazed at what a wonderful daughter, wife and mother she has become!

You can find her pie recipe here.

  10. What a great post Debbie. Such a rite of passage for both you and your daughter. I was thinking something similar this AM when I thought about one of my boys...when will I automatically think of them as men? As parents when do we give up the notion of them as children vs adults? Tricky stuff :)

  12. What a lovely sweet post this is Debbie. I know what you mean when you say the job is done. We have 4 sons, all grown up, 3 have a woman in their lives, the youngest is still single so I feel that my job is not done with him. NOw a month ago he suddenly had to go to Singapore for his work, I worried of course like most mothers will do, but yesterday he came home and I know he did it and he can do it on his own. Of course he could why did I worry? Is my job done? I think so.....But we always will be mothers, right?

  13. Happy birthday to your daughter. What a wonderful post to share again for her birthday. Its a special celebration for you too. My oldest child told me once I made him crazy retelling my get to the hospital story every year on his birthday. Then a few years ago on one of his daughter's birthday, he called to say now that he's had children, he understands why. Happy celebration to you too!

  15. Debbie,
Ah~h~h...the joys of motherhood! Like you, we share the holidays with our son and daughter~in~law. Imagine my surprise when they announced they had made a homemade pie together!!! (My son does most all the cooking at their home!) I thought if they could make a pie together...I had few worries about their relationship! It was beautiful and delicious! Thanks for sharing this sweet memory with us!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  18. Hi Debbie Sweetie...
Oh I simply adore this post. What a precious post this is. It brought tears to my eyes. I too, have felt the same thing many times when my daughter has made us dinner, yes a complete meal, and it is so delicious, and she will say I used your recipe Mom. A dash of this and a dash of that, a little bit of love, and that is that. I sometimes laugh until I cry. She will tell me a memory that I didn't know existed in her heart. One of something I showed her, that she stood quietly watching. They still amaze us do they not. I know that if something happens to me, she will not starve, her family will be fed. How precious. Thank you for the laughter and tears this morning. I so enjoyed this read and what memories it gave to me. Thank you sweet friend. Thank you.
