A New Thrifting Find...but...What Is It?

IMG_8324 I want to show you my latest thrifting find. Isn’t it wonderfully old and chippy? It looks like it has been in grandma’s attic or out in the barn waiting to be discovered. I found it while antiquing with some fellow Georgia bloggers. (Click here to read CC Catherine's blog!) But I think I need a little help deciding exactly what it is. A candelabra is the obvious first choice, isn’t it? But…

page2 …Baby Kitty and I checked it out from stem to stern and there is no sign of any candle wax whatsoever!

IMG_8309 And the little cups have indentions that are so small that not much more than a birthday candle could fit! Any ideas? Hmmm… an antique egg holder?

IMG_8274 Whatever it is, it got my little wheels turning. How about using it to hold some baby pumpkins for Halloween? It came with its own spider webs already!! lol

straight1 I just quickly jazzed it up with what I had on hand. It makes a cute Fall decoration, doesn’t it?

straight Now I’m thinking…add some pretty glass balls at Christmas, colored eggs at Easter, some round candles or some fruit between holidays. I usually grab the spray paint, but I am leaning toward leaving this one as is. Tell me what you think…because I think I am in love!!!! lol

  6. Debbie... well, it certainly looks like something I'd pick up on a junkin' trip! I was thinking maybe it held those glass votives with the stem? but they're about candle width... I like the idea of of vintage glass Christmas balls... and the two ideas you've shared are perfect... I know you'll put it to good use, whatever it is!

  7. Hi Debbie! OH, I love your new thingy! I think it is a candlelabra and the tiny little holes are to hold those little glass hurricanes that hold votives! Oh, you've been playing with it and it looks lovely with the pumpkins and the candles! Love, love, love it!
    Be a sweetie,

  9. Hi Debbie...well,girl...I'm not sure what it is but I sure do like it! :-) It's so versatile...so many neat things you can do with it. You know, someone once gave me some beeswax candles, and they were a really odd size. I think they would have fit in those holes. Ummm, maybe it was designed to hold those. Love the way it looks with the pumpkins! Beautiful!

  31. Whatever it is, you and your creative genius have made it look fabulous. Love the pumpkins in it, and I love the round candles with the pretty b/w checked ribbon. You are so right about the Christmas balls and Easter eggs. (I wonder if it was originally a hanging chandellier that held those little candle light bulbs, and when it quit working somebody took the wiring out??). laurie

  57. I bet the little holes are for the glass votive holders that have the little knob on the bottom. They were used for sconces I think. Maybey someone put it together to make a candleabra that wouldn't drip all over their best tablecloth! LOL!

But I love all the creative ways you've displayed it!

  60. Well...you certainly made that wonderful old time piece look fantastic. I am wondering if the candles should be those long very slender ones. You don't see them often, except in magazines...but the are very slender and tall. However...what you have done with it is wonderful!!!

  61. Oh, I love what you've done with it! And I love baby kitty, too. :)

  62. Debbie, you KNOW that was meant for me! I saw it FIRST !!! What a fun find.... love it! I think it's to hold apples all around it and a pineapple in the center..who knows, I love it with pumpkins and then you go and do it up with black and white and I love it that way too!

  66. This is too cool! My mom had one in white & would use votive cups for her candles. That's probably what the little indentations are for. I like it in black better - think I'll paint her white one black! Love the pumpkins on it & ornaments would be the bomb! ☺♥☺ diane

  74. I have one just like yours! Only mine is a maize color with white peaking through. I found it at a garage sale several years ago for $3. I usually have votives with candles sitting in each "cup," but I've also had it full of pumpkins and gourds just like you did with yours. It's been to weddings, school functions, and, of course, in various rooms through Casa St. Michael. I know you'll enjoy yours as much as I do mine!

    Grins!

  75. That may have been mine years ago! I bought one just like it, except that it was painted white at the time, at the Fitz and Floyd Outlet that was once in Dallas. I never did use it as a candle holder - or use it at all for that matter, but did decide to paint it black...then I still never used it. Eventually I sent it off to Goodwill.

At any rate - whether it was mine or not - they were available in the 90's in Dallas at Fitz and Floyd.

  76. I know it's tempting to put the question out there to see what others can tell you about it, but my gosh, you could've just done the post with what YOU came up with, because I love what you did with this ummmm..."item." :) The only problem you're going to have it resisting the temptation of using it over and over and over! Love it! ~Zuni
