Mosaic Monday/Outdoor Wednesday...or...Butterflies and Sleepy Babies

page4 My butterfly bushes are in full bloom and attracting some beautiful visitors! My favorites are the Eastern Tiger Swallowtails. They hang from the shrubs like elegant Christmas ornaments! My grandson tells me this is the state butterfly of Georgia. He learned that in first grade. I didn’t even know we had a state butterfly! lol

IMG_7640 Isn’t it gorgeous? I love the way you can see the shadowy outline of the flowers through its delicate wings! The afternoon sun is streaming through them like stained glass windows.

IMG_7646 Even the underside is beautiful! I love the little blue edges and the soft, fat body, striped like a tiny zebra!!

IMG_7628 I also have some new babies in my ornamental cherry tree! The robins have built a second nest and have hatched another brood. The funny thing is that the nest was almost blown away before the eggs were laid and my grandson and I put it back. We had to rework it because it was such a mess. We must be good nest builders because the robins chose to lay their eggs in it anyway! Here are two of the three babies fast asleep.

IMG_7627 The third baby always sleeps like this with his beak propped up against the tree and his mouth open! I can almost hear Big Bird’s funny snore….snort…wah wah wah wah wah !

IMG_7629 Oh oh! It looks like I woke up two of them! Don’t you love those fuzzy mohawks???

IMG_7425 Now I’ve gone and done it! They’re all awake! I’d better get the heck out of Dodge before their mom and dad discover that I’ve been visiting! I’ll try to keep you up to date on their progress!

Thanks for coming by! Please head on over to Mary’s wonderful blog Little Red House for Mosaic Monday to see one of her beautiful mosaics and to find out who else is playing along this week.

  1. Great captures of your butterflies. i don't get much luck with butterfly photos unless they are housed. I also like the style of framing your photos. Your little birdies look like they are hungry!
    Have a great week!

  3. I actually took photos of that exact kind of butterfly 2 weeks ago in Nebraska. I hadn't posted the photos yet! I'm so glad to know what they are called, and where they come from. Have a wonderful weekend, and stop by to say hello sometime!

  6. Hi Debbie
I took some pics on Fri. of 3 little little nestling babes... wondering where momma was. I felt I should do something again! i didn't! I came back to check on them today and they are gone. I think a snake or "something" gobbled them up... they didn't fly the coop, they were way too small.
My butterfly bush never came around this year. I moved so much stuff around I think it went into shock! I miss the butterflies, but have enjoyed yours.

  8. Your butterfly bush is doing a great job attracting butterflies! You've got a whole collection!

I'm so surprised the robins use the nest. I was always told they would abandon an egg or nest that had been touched by people. I'm glad you were able to "remodel" it for them after the rescue!

  19. Quelles belles photos, Debbie! Linda

  21. I'm transfixed by your beautiful mosaic! The elements and the background is stunning. Now I have to find out how you did it. The baby birdies are oh so precious. I never seem to get to see them that young. But perhaps that is a good thing! This is all so lovely and mesmerizing!

  22. Love your babies! Such great pictures. The birdhouse just outside our screened-in porch has been home to 3 bunches of babies this summer - we've enjoyed keeping up with their progress. Mom & Dad get really noisy when we are sitting on the porch - too close for comfort, I guess. Have a great week. Sally

  33. I feel so bad seeing those little birds...I found a tiny nest in the middle of my fern hangingon my front porch...it had two tiny little eggs in it....so cute...so I did my best not to disturb it but had to move the plant to the ground when we went up to Jersey so it could get water....those poor eggs are still sitting in the nest....no babies...just two lonely eggs....I think by disturbing the plant I scared off the mother...I'm sure one of these days when I walk out the front door I'm going to get pecked to death like in "The Birds"....

  35. wow. What beautiful butterflies. You captured some beautiful pictures of them.
That is so funny you mention that the robins had a second nest of babies! We have a bird that had a two nest season too! I had walked over tot he nest to take a peek to see if the egg shells were left, and the Mama bird flew out. WHOOPS! Then a few days later we heard the babies again! Yay!
