Monet's Water Lilies...or...Day at the Museum

I am soooo excited because my grandson and I got to take a little trip to Monet's gardens in Giverny, France this week! Well, not really…but as close as I can afford right now! We went to see Monet’s water lilies on exhibit at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia! Here they are...

The painting is called Reflections of Clouds on the Water-Lily Pond and consists of three huge panels forming a giant triptych forty feet long!! Aren’t they beautiful?? You will have to imagine them end to end to get the full effect! And I am extra excited because…

monet w lilies I got to introduce my 8 year old grandson to Monsieur Monet in person…so to speak! He has been a big fan since he was in kindergarten, thanks to a wonderful art teacher. Also, notice that you can see from this photo just how big the panels really are!

IMG_0527 I have promised him a trip to Giverny, France to see Monet’s gardens in person, too. How did he react to the paintings? He just kept saying amazing! over and over. We had to drop back by the water lilies two more times before we left the museum! In the gift shop, he asked for a book about Monet, a journal with water lilies on it so he can take notes and draw his own water lilies (his words), and a magnet of the painting for his fridge! Amazing!

  1. It's such fun when grandchildren express a real interest in something.

My 7 year old grandson has been totally absorbed in Ancient Egypt for about 3 years. Together we made a mummy from a game chicken.

Monet sounds a lot more fun than making mummies but somehow I don't think Caleb would go for Monet.

I hope you have many wonderful adventures with your grandson.

  2. LOOOOOVE Monet!!!

Yes, any fruit would be a great addition. Add during the last minute or two of churning.

  3. Sounds like you have a future art collector, dealer, or maybe even a future artist on your hands. How wonderful!!!

  4. Thanks for reminding me of pickled peaches, they're the best.

I should have said Cornish Hen rather than game chicken. Yes, it was real. Quite an experience.

  9. We have been having a truly lovely visit with our daughter and her family. Our granddaughter is so precious!! It is hard when they are so far away so we savor every moment. I have been able to cook a lot because our daughter is not feeling up to it since her dental surgery. My hubby and son-in-law are loving it though!
I saw a traveling Monet show in Boston several years ago and some at the New York Metroplitan Museum of Art...spectacular. My fave artist and the Boston trip was a gift from my husband who took me there. How wonderful for you that your grandson is so interested.

  10. Isn't it wonderful that your grandson can already appreciate the beautiful work of Monet at his young, tender age?! It is always interesting to me to observe what sparks the interest of a child and then watching to see how it influences him/her throughout their life. And I'm sure many years from now he will have very fond memories of the time he spent at the Monet exhibit with his grandma. :)

  11. Oh Debbie, he is such a precious and smart little boy and you are so wonderful to introduce him to the fine arts. What a gift to be able to see Monet at his age and appreciate it. Maybe he's a budding artist in his own time. I'm so glad you're getting to spend so much time with him this summer. Great fun and memories. Hugs, Marty

  13. Debbie - What a lucky young man he is to have a grandmother to enrich his little life. There was a wonderful art teacher at the first elementary school where I began my teaching career. She provided those children with unique experiences in all art forms and mediums. Those little second grade children could carry on an infomed discussion of art and artists. Sorry - didn't mean to go on so long. Grandchildren are God's true gift. Have a great weekend.

  14. Debbie, Has your grandson read "Linnea in Monet's Garden" by Cristina Bjork? http://www.amazon.com/Linnea-Monets-Garden-Cristina-Bjork/dp/9129583144 If not, it would be a wonderful follow up to your trip to the High. It is the story of a little girl who travels with a family friend to les jardins de Giverny to see the water lily paintings. The illustrations are really lovely and the story is very sweet. I have read it with all three of mes enfants. One of these days I hope to take them to see the gardens in person. Peut-etre un de ces jours! For now we are planning our own trip downtown when my mom comes to visit :-)

  26. Debbie, I enjoyed this post as well as the previous one on Giverny. How absolutely wonderful to stay right across the street. I'm going to remember that!
Do you have a copy of Monet's House by Heide Michels? If not, you need this book. It is a wonderful peek into every room of Monet's Giverny.
