Tablescape Thursday: A French Child's Table...and...A Child!

Welcome to another Tablescape Thursday with our hostess with the mostest, Susan at Between Naps on the Porch! Please be sure to visit her wonderful blog to see one of her fabulous tablescapes and to find a list of this week's participants.

My co-host this week is Baby Kitty, who is looking very pleased with himself tonight. That's because he has a big part to play later on!

I am calling this tablescape A French Child's Table because, as you can see, the dinnerware sports French phrases. Actually, I got it at La Madeleine French Bakery and Café about 7 or 8 years ago and it is made in America. I fell in love the second I saw it! And, of course, the fact that it's blue and white helps.

The bowl says...Eat your soup! I love that little tomato!

The plate says...Clean your plate! (Actually, it says Finish your plate, but I'm translating it the way we would say it.)

The little cup says...Drink...

...your...

...milk! Isn't it cute?

This little lug bowl isn't part of the set, but I wanted to show it to you. I bought it on a trip to Paris when my daughter and grandson came to visit me in France. This is the typical bowl for drinking café au lait in the mornings. Yes, they drink out of a bowl! You can find them in the touristy souvenir shops with almost any common name on them.

This particular one has pictures of all of the major Parisian monuments on it. It's a nice little souvenir from a wonderful visit.

The baby spoon on the left is my daughter's and the one on the right is mine. It matches my mom's flatware...Silver Flutes by Towle. However, you can see that she was one of the first ladies on the block to have a garbage disposal and quite a few pieces of her silver suffered for it, including this spoon!

I found this little silver plated fork in an antique shop and had to have it! I love anything with grapes! It's an 1847 Rogers Brothers pattern from 1904 called Vintage. I almost wish I hadn't found it because now I am on the hunt for more!!

Here's a close-up of the handle. Isn't it exquisite? The little tendrils of the grapevine are wrapping around it. It is engraved...CD. I don't know who you are, CD, but I have your fork and I'm not giving it back! lol

The little duck is another gift from my dear friend Marty at A Stroll through Life and is a brother to a duck that she has! Isn't he a cutie? And isn't she such a sweetie? She sent me a whole box full of wonderful goodies that I've been sharing with you in my last few tablescapes!

And there you have my tablescape for a French child's table. And of course, a child's tablescape needs a child, and here he is...

....our co-host Baby Kitty having his first meal of solid food! Note that he has no manners...sorry, Miss Janice...and has his feet in the bowl! He is about 5 weeks old here and it was a very happy day for me. You see, I found him in the driveway...literally just born and abandoned. We think his mom was a feral cat having her first litter. I took him in and fed him orphaned kitten's milk around the clock for the first 5 weeks of this life. Whew! I was a little old for that new baby thing! Thank goodness it doesn't last long for kittens!

And here is his most recent photo! Isn't he a big ol' handsome guy?? He is almost 4 years old now, but still thinks I am his mama...which I am!! lol
Thanks for dropping by for a visit! I hope you enjoyed seeing my child's tablescape...and my child! Be sure to head on over to Susan's to continue your tour de tablescapes!!

  12. Debbie, that is the most adorable tablescape and story! That china is precious and the fork! Be still my heart! And I laughed so hard at this... "I don't know who you are, CD, but I have your fork and I'm not giving it back! lol" I don't blame you one single bit! :-)

I got teary reading about poor Baby Kitty being abandonned, but oh, if he were going to be abandonned, how fortunate for him that he was abandonned in your driveway! God smiled on him that day, and God is still smiling on him. What a guy he is, and what a mom he has!

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

I thought I'd like to be a child again...and be French. Love this place setting. So happy to see the silver baby spoons. Love that yours was what your Mom's silver pattern was. Towle is so timeless!
My silver is Old Colonial by Towle. I selected it when I was 16and still love it.

  17. Debbie,
Linda

  18. Debbie... I always love your tablescape posts... and this one is no exception... but is exceptional!

and as for manners... I believe it is entirely appropriate for a wee kitten to place his tiny paws into the bowl while sipping his milk... just as long as he licks them clean upon finishing...

  21. Deb,

This is just the sweetest tablescape I have seen by far. I just adore children dishes and the fact they are French make them more coveted! And thank you for translating! ;-)

Your Rogers Brothers fork is very pretty~I too, love grapes (and by the way, I nearly piddled myself over the "I have your fork...). I have a ton of antique/thrift silver & silver plated pieces and many of them are Rogers Brothers. I will take a peek tonight to see if I have anything with grapes. If you have a chance, let me know how you are able to search for the patterns. And, hee hee, many of mine look like they may have been through a garbage disposal also!

I did not know anything about Baby Kitty other than he was pretty much Employee of the Month most times! Oh, my heart aches at the thought of him being abandoned. Luckily, it happened in the right place~for both of you! I always tell my dogs (yes, I talk to them~a lot!), "You could have been junk yard dogs!"

Oh goodness, I've rambled on. Thank you so much for the sweet Bebe Tablescape!!

    xoxo

  69. What a cute post. Your cutie pie guy looks just like a cat I used to have named Muffin. She disappeared on my wedding day! My Mom didn't have the heart to tell me until I got back from my honeymoon. I was devastated.
I have some appetizer knives and forks that have grapes on them. I love them! I got them in Paso Robles at a winery (imagine that!) A lady was kind of looking at them. Her husband called her away, and she left them behind much to my delight! I snatched them up and was paying for them when she walked to the counter and asked if they had any more. Nope! I kinda felt bad, but hey, she left them there! I love finding just the perfect thing.
    Have a good day! Karen

  72. What a darling little table setting. Little people should be allowed to dine this way instead of using plastic all of the time. The Vintage pattern is also one of my favorites. I started with a few thrift shop pieces and then expanded to other grape themed patterns ~ the grapes are addictive! And your sweet little kitten is so adorable =^..^= !!!

  73. Debbie, I'm having a leisure afternoon reading some of your older posts. How I adore to visit Confessions! Your posts leave me feeling happy and inspired. This child's table is full of delights. I have some of the French lesson cups that La Madeline sold for many years. I wish I had purchased each one because they have now discounted having them made. A friend in Dallas was the original designer and painter for these, but she moved to CO a few years ago. My cups a the large latte cups. I like to use them for soup. I've got a post planned using them. Just need to get my act together and get it posted. LOL
Thanks again for sharing your creative spirit....Sarah
