A Swoon, an Afternoon and a Spoon...or...My Favorite Authors


I have been tagged by Carrie at Oak Rise Cottage (http://oakrisecottage.blogspot.com/) to answer some questions concerning my favorite authors. If you have not had an opportunity to visit her blog, please drop by! She is a fellow plate/china enthusiast who also has a wonderful collection of nativity scenes.

Who is your all-time favorite author and why? Ohhhh...that's easy if I think of it as my all-time favorite book...Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. For me it is the most unforgettable love story ever written. The power of Heathcliff's love for Catherine made such an impression on me as a teenage girl that I have never recovered from it. If teenage girls swooned back in the 60's, I would have swooned! If you don't believe me, read this:

"Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living! You said I killed you—haunt me, then! The murdered do haunt their murderers. I believe—I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always—take any form—drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh God! it is unutterable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!"

Are you swooning yet? And what makes it even better is that it was written by a very sheltered minister's daughter who had probably never been in love in her life.


Who was your first favorite author and why? This is also easy...Kenneth Grahame who wrote The Wind in the Willows. I think I loved this book because I found it all by myself on the bookshelf at home. I was fascinated from the first words. Toad, Rat and Mole are still some of my favorite characters. To this day, I love anything involving little animals wearing old fashioned clothes and "messing about in boats" for an afternoon on the river!

Do you still consider him/her to be among your favorites? Oh, absolutely! This book is still considered a classic in children's literature. I plan to introduce it to my grandson when he's old enough.

Who is the most recent addition to your list of favorite authors, and why? That is also easy...it's Peter Mayle and I think the reason is obvious! As a retired French teacher who has lived in France, I find myself eating his every word with a spoon! I love his stories of the little villages and the villagers of the Luberon in Provence. And who can resist his detailed descriptions of French cuisine ...not me! That is why I chose the Luberon as my vacation spot when I retired. I really like his fiction better than his non-fiction. If you are not familiar with his work, try A Good Year or Hotel Pastis. And bon appétit!

If someone were to ask you who your favorite authors are right now, what are the first words that would pop out of your mouth? It's funny, but I still love the classics! I love anything by the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy. Maybe I like the time period...maybe I'm a romantic...or maybe I just wish I could wear those dresses, ride in carriages and have a name like Bathsheba Everdeen or Elinor Dashwood! I'm not sure!

Because it is such a busy time of year, I will not tag anyone, but I would love to read your responses if you should decide to take on the challenge!

  1. Oh what a lovely posting....actually made me think....its very rarely that I read fiction. I devour cookery books....how funny is that. my DD always laughs at me as she loves reading....she cannot understand that I actually read them like a book...going through the notes etc.

  3. I love the Bronte sisters, too! Oh, how I love them! And WUTHERING HEIGHTS is just a sensational book! My favorite children's book author, though, is Shel Silverstein. I think he writes more for adults than children, but I enjoy many of his poems! :-)

Hi Deb,I would have to say I love Alexadra Stoddard, of course it is about design but that is where my passion is.I also love Victorian Times by Evelyn Plante.As far as children books go, right now I am in love with the Fancy Nancy series for little girl.On a spiritual note I read and reread The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren depending where you are at in the journey we call life it always can seem new again.Kathysue

  7. Reading is probably my number one hobby. I'm always reading at least one book. I love fiction and get caught up in all different kinds of romances esp. humorous ones. I also like to read nonfiction books about France and Paris in particular. As a child my favorite authors were Laura Ingalls Wilder and Walter Farley, but my all time fav childhood book was Little Women. As an adult I read Wuthering Heights and loved it. GM Debbie...Loved your list girl!! and I love to read Danille Steel books never miss a one or Nora Roberts..but you know since RMS and now Blogging I don't have the time to sit and just read and keep my house clean also..maybe after the Hoildays I can find some time to just sit in my Old RED robe with my coffee and read again..Hope you have a great day dear friend..and did you get me that Mc Coy cookies jar yet ?? ha ha !! hugs and smiles Gloria

  9. Good morning Debbie, We just got lights back on after the ice we had last night. It was a virtual winter wonderland out there. I adore reading books. Just finished one last night by Fern Michaels. I also love James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Sue Grafton to name a few. I really enjoy when Paula Dehn puts out a new magazine does that count? lol To say nothing of "all" my decorating books. I've been pouring through those like crazy.. It is so much fun to learn more about you my dear friend. hugs ~lynne~

    Came to your blog for the first time. I don't have one but Miss Janice is my BFF and I click on some from her site. I love yours and immediately noticed two things I have to comment on...your kitties...I have two and one is called Bella (short for Isabella) and then Ladeda. The other thing is your music...from Pride and Predujice. I watch those things over and over and love that music. I'm a Jane Austen lover.

    Mysteries, Romance, yes horror novels like Stephen King and so many others. Decorating books and magazines...They count right.

  15. Well we certainly love all the same authors! No surprise there! And the soundtrack from Pride and Prejudice is wonderful!! That movie makes me swoon! *winks* I have to say that I was so taken by The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis) when I was a child that to this day I find armoires magical!   16. I am also a classics lover and an English major. I don't read much now...can't seem to find the time...but when I do...the classics are my favs. I remember when I read To Kill a Mockingbird and ran, ran, ran...as fast as I could to the library to check out more Harper Lee books. I thought I was going to cry when the librarian told me it was the only one she wrote. A few years ago, I picked up The Secret Garden...loved it...next thing I know...they make a movie of it. :-) I'm also a big Bronte fan...loved Jane Eyre. I'm crazy about the unrequited love that goes on and on and you wonder if they will ever be together...so romantic. Did you see the movie, Miss Potter? I also love Shakespeare. If you like Shakespeare, we'll have to get a group together and visit the Shakespeare Tavern...haven't been there in a while.

  17. Due to diminishing eyesight, I seldom read novels any longer. Like Knittings Nice I love to "read" cookbooks. It gives me a window into a specific subject or region and the origin of the recipes. Quite often I learn about a new ingredient that I haven't used before. They can be read in short spurts instead of the eight or ten hour marathons I use to be guilty of.
    My all time favorite book after the Bible is "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. It was around a thousand pages and took me about three days to finish. It had a profound effect on my thinking as a teenager.

  18. Oh Debbie, this may be my favorite post. We currently have 8 bookcases full of things that we can't possibly part with. I laughed when I read Susans comment about to Kill a Mockingbird, the SAME thing happened to me! That is still my favorite book of all time. My favorite current author is probably James Lee Burke, his writing is absolutely lyrical even when his subject matter is not. I love mysteries, historical fiction, non-fiction, I'll pretty much read the cereal box if it's all I've got around lol. Thanks for sharing this Kathy
