Here’s what you will need:
- Starfish template found here …print it and cut it out. (The pattern you see in my photos is no longer available so I have substituted a similar one.)
- Pre-made pillow cover (Mine came from the Pottery Barn Outlet…on sale for $9.00 since the button need to be sewn back on. Woo hoo! However, they also have them at Hobby Lobby.)
- Burlap (1/4 yard should be plenty)
- Heat n Bond Ultra Hold or a similar product
- Iron
- Pillow form (Mine is down and came from Goodwill for $3.00)
1. Cut an 8 1/2 inch square from burlap for each starfish that you plan to make. I made five.
2. Cut an equal number of squares from the Heat n Bond and apply them to the squares of burlap, following the directions on the package.
3. Pin the template to each square and cut out the burlap.
4. Place the cutouts on the pillow cover in a pattern that pleases you. Notice that I cut one of them in half and let it appear in two spots. I later trimmed the arms of the starfish in the bottom right corner as well. Pin them in place.
5. Following package directions, remove the paper backing and iron the starfish in place one by one.
6. Let them cool and then add the pillow insert.
And….taaa daaa!…here it is! I love the little summery touch that it adds to my décor without being too much!
And just in case you need another idea for an easy way to add a little summer, here are my summer Mason jar candles!
And maybe one of my favorite summer projects…my easy and inexpensive sheet music sailboats!
As for the staff, they are really enjoying summer since cat TV has added a new channel…the Chipmunk Channel!

Debbie, I was "spoofed" a few months ago - and I don't even know what that means but I know I did not receive all the blogs I was subscribed to. I went into my old mail and stopped them. I waited a day and then went back in and re-applied. So far so good. I have missed all of you.
ReplyDeletelol I don't know what "spoofed" means either! There have been problems with Feedburner, the service that delivers my emails. I have suggested, as you may have seen, adding my blog address to your contact list. So far, it is working for me! Glad you are finding our emails in your inbox again!
DeleteI just love this pillow….so cute…along with the boats..how cleaver!
ReplyDeleteCreative place3ment of the starfish on the pillow cover. I would watch chipmunk TV too! Pinning the boats for a summer project - so cute.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbie, for the wonderfully simple yet attractive ideas! I love the starfish pillow and am absolutely going to make one! Rosie @ The Magic Hutch
ReplyDeleteLove this pillow!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the pillow and LOVE that it's so easy to make. Thank for the tutorial and starfish template link.
ReplyDeleteI love all your diy ideas!! I am tho having problems with the starfish template link. It opens up to a list but none of the lists lead to the same starfish you showed. Are there any tips?
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the pattern is no longer available. I have added a similar one in the post. Here's the new link: http://patternuniverse.com/download/starfish-pattern/
DeletePerfect timing featuring your summer projects. One of first places I decorate is my shutter shelf(like other's mantles). Have had bird cages, etc. on wall and shutter shelf. Is time for a change to Summer decorations finally. So beachy it will be, then my bee decorations, then travel, by the time I go thru all those it will be Fall. Time now to get busy making summer pillow covers.
ReplyDeleteCan hardly wait to get busy using transfer graphics you so generously shared. Will have couch covered with wonderful Summer beachy pillows.
Love all photos of your kitties and cat tv. Want to reach out to cuddle all of them.
