I seem to have a thing about sailboats lately! They star in my new summer sailboat pillow…a combination of burlap and canvas sporting a wonderful sailboat stamp. You can see more of it, including a tutorial and free graphics, by clicking here.
And I have pulled out my vintage Joseph Conrad novels…part of a series of his complete works dating from 1925 that my friend Linda at Nina’s Nest and I found at Goodwill a while back. He is still one of my favorite authors, dating from my teenage years when a crush on Peter O’Toole made me read Lord Jim in preparation for the movie! lol And, to my surprise, I discovered my love for books about the sea! A more fitting prop for my little sailboats cannot be found!
The boats themselves were very easy to make.
- I pulled out some interesting-looking vintage sheet music from my stash…also a Goodwill find several years ago. I followed the directions that I found here for making origami sailboats. Fortunately, sheet music is the perfect size! If you prefer video instructions, you will find them here.
- Then I cut a bamboo skewer in half and pushed it through the sail portion of the boat, taping it to the inside.
- Next, I added a length of string, hot-gluing the center of it to the top of my little mast. I looped and tied the string through little holes I had made in either end of the boat using another bamboo skewer.
- Finally, I embellished the string with little pennants made from toile scrapbooking paper.
And…voilà!…here it is! I am taking it for a little ride on a stormy sea to test it out!
This one has something special. Do you see what it is? Yes…one of the pennants sports a black cat!
And here’s a final look! I love them...and they were free since I already had everything I needed! I am going to have fun moving them around the house to add a little summery touch! And…now that I can make origami boats, I will test them out in the wading pool with my little grands!
And in case you are wondering…where is the staff…I have to confess that they have a new addiction…Cat TV! Miss Isabella runs to the window each morning when the blinds are raised to begin her vigil! In fact, she has become such a couch potato that we are beginning a diet plan. I’ll keep you posted on how that is going!
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed having a little peek at my sheet music sailboats! Please visit these wonderful bloggers and their beautiful blogs to see what they are up to and to find a list of this week’s participants!

OMG! I love them! If we weren't packing out to move next month, I'd totally whip some up and put them out. I'll have to pin this for next summer.
ReplyDeleteThese are so sweet! They look perfect on your books, and make a great summer vignette! Love them!

I love these little sailboats. I think I'll be making some. :) This was a great post. Especially the staff's new pastime.

ReplyDeleteI love your sailboats. It's always this time of the year when I experiment with the newsprint paper hats and yours are just a grand new idea.
Thanks, for sharing
Poor fluffy Isabella.
Kathy
Debbie...these are so sweet! I tried to make one out of regular paper and it looks ok, but yours, out of sheet music, are so lovely!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen these since I was little. I think I would have to practice with some old newspaper before I used my good paper. Cat tv, very funny.
ReplyDeleteOh Debbie! How adorable those sailboats are. The would be so cute on a tablescape too.....Love the sheet music....reminds me of songs about sailing away......
ReplyDeleteI love the sailboats! Very spiffy!
ReplyDeleteJust Loved them , Very Nice Idea a Guess You can also pick
ReplyDeletefavorite songs if you give it as a gift and tell them. Great Idea

ReplyDeleteHow incredibly adorable!!!......love it Debbie!!! You are just so creative!!
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteAdorable music sheet sailboats, dear friend!!!
Being the mother of sons, I could imagine a sailboat themed decor for a boys bedroom easily with several of these displayed throughout the room!!!
I adore that Miss Kitty is on the flag!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
Fondly,
Pat
A few months ago I was searching Charles Faudree and to my delight your blog was one of the results. I love everything you share. I do have a question. Where do you get your burlap and canvas? I've seen burlap around and none as nice as yours. Thank you! Pamela
ReplyDeleteHi Pamela! So glad you like my blog! Charles Faudree is fabulous, isn't he? As for the burlap, I have found that the nicest quality comes from Hancock Fabrics...closer weave, fewer slubs. Thanks for the visit!...hugs...Debbie
DeleteThe boats are adorable and I'm pretty sure that putting a bird feeder on the window like that borders on cat abuse :)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you like the boats, Lauren! I have one staff member who would watch cars drive by all day! lol They are pretty easily entertained...as am I! Hugs...Debbie
DeleteLove these! What a great idea, but then, I've come to expect those from you and your staff! At least it is harder for the staff to watch cat TV at night so bring out the kitty treadmill!
ReplyDeleteDeb you already know I have a thing for sailboats and then you add words and black and white, I am enamored with your new DIY!
ReplyDeleteGreat job as always,
Kathysue
What a great project. I know lots of people will copy this for a summer decoration.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I love any music page projects and these sailboats are so fun!
ReplyDeleteToo stinkin' cute! So... has anyone gone to the link and actually tried to make per the instructions? I was excited to whip one up for my grandson - shoot, I can't even figure out how to do the first fold!
ReplyDeleteSorry you had problems, Susan! Here are the instructions in video format. Maybe that will work better for you!

ReplyDeleteCynthia
This is a GREAT post....
ReplyDeleteI am a musician, so of course I LOVE the boats!! AND, we have TWO cat TV's at our house...the Princess Posie has her choice. Unfortunately for US, one of them is the kitchen table....oh well, I just change the cloth a lot :^)
Thanks for a great post...gotta' get the grandgirls to make me a boat or three.
Blessings,
J
This is such a neat idea! And they look very classy, too

ReplyDeleteCristina

ReplyDeleteKely
These are so clever! Cuteness!!! Thanks for linking at The Inspiration Gallery!!
ReplyDeleteThis is the most creative use of sheet music I've seen so far; I've made flowers, birds, etc from vintage sheet music. But these are far more original.
ReplyDeleteYour project is amazing - I love it! First time visiting and I can't wait to look around :)
ReplyDeleteThese are really nostalgic little paper boats, and I love your displays...what wonderful vintage books. I love when an idea is so simple and inexpensive, but you really did a nice job on yours.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! I will feature them on HSH this week! Thank you for joining Home Sweet Home!
ReplyDeleteSherry

I love these, Debbie! I'm featuring them as one of my top three Home{work} Wednesday favorites. Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDeleteThese are fantastic. I've played piano for 25 years, so I love anything related to sheet music. I'd love to have you link these or any of your other projects to this week's link party. Hope to see you there! http://thelifeofjenniferdawn.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-little-bird-told-me-link-party-50.html
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled upon your blog via pinterest. What caught my eye was the sailboat, like everyone else says, they are beautiful. I had forgotten how much fun it was to make these, I brushed up my paper folding skills and haven't stopped! I've made an entire fleet for my son and a rival fleet for my daughter. Now I want a mini fleet of my own to decorate and I already knew I wanted to use sheet music paper. I'm going to love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love your sailboats! To make them with sheet music is so clever!
ReplyDeleteThe sailboats are precious. I have sheet music so I need to get folding.
