Halloween Fun: Wisteria Inspired Witchy Crows

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Wisteria Inspired Witchy CrowsHave you noticed…tiny witch hats are all the rage this year! I am seeing them everywhere! Sooo… when I saw them topping little ravens on Wisteria’s web site, I knew  had to make my own version…and here they are! They are actually crows from Dollar Tree all dressed up for Halloween!

Kitty WitchNot to be left out, my co-host today Miss Kitty is also sporting a jaunty witch hat! One pop of orange and she’s the perfect combination of Halloween colors!

Purple Witchy CrowThis project is super simple…take one crow from Dollar Tree, add a tiny witch hat made of a scrap of felt using this pattern, add ribbon and voilĂ …a witchy crow at a mere fraction of the cost of the Wisteria version!
Orange Witchy CrowAnd here is his brother sporting the stylish orange version of the witchy crow attire. Cute, huh? I just cut out the hat pattern and use hot glue (on the low temp setting for fewer ouchies!) to adhere the pattern parts and secure the ribbon.
Target Witchy OwlAnd have you noticed that even Target is getting in on the tiny witch hat act with this little witchy owl…also similar to one being offered by Wisteria but at a much lower price. Love him!
Halloween VignetteThere are even funny tiny witches at Dollar Tree with little dangling legs. And Michaels is joining the tiny witch hat craze by offering a collection of several kinds of tiny witch hat ornaments that also make great little mini-pumpkin toppers! I even saw a tiny witch hat garland there!
CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Wisteria Inspired Witchy Crows 4So now what do you think? The crows want to know if they are not the most stylish birds you have ever seen. I will have to admit that the real ones are some of my favorite birds…even without the hats!  What about you?

  5. I was just thinking about you, wondering what you were going to do next to inspire me. ;o) Love the witch hats. That would be a fun craft to do w/ the kids. I was just looking @ that owl at Target. He is pretty cute, and the photo makes me want to go back and get him. The picture of your assistant w/ the crows in the background is perfect for Halloween! Can't wait to see what you're up to for Christmas!!!

  8. Debbie, I think there's a serious problem with Miss Kitty. 3 years in a row I bought lovely crows from Michael's and each and every one found itself in the mouth of Miss Maui. If it has a feather it becomes her prey. Right now she's chasing a feather around the floor that she snatched from a new arrangement on the coffee table. The poor crows lost in our home.

Guess that means I have to head to the craft store for some black felt and ribbon. Thanks for the great idea.

  20. Yes, I have noticed all the witch hats, which I love!! I even found some in Pottery Barn. They were meant to be wine bottle toppers but they would work for my crows too! I must get to Dollar Tree for some of those cute crows. I'm seeing them everywhere and I don't ever do Wisteria unless I can't find it elsewhere and I can't live without it! :) Now I'll be dressing up all my critters for the holidays too. Linda

  24. Cutest things ever, Debbie! And I mean CUTE. And Isabella in that hat is too funny!

I learned something rather interesting on a visit to see an ancestral home in Ipswich, MA. Yes, my family tree is full of nuts (particularly the Southern nuts), but I have Yankees in my tree, too. Anyhow, I went to Ipswich and found out at this tour of the home that the pointy hats were originally reserved for the gentry. And if you were a servant and tried to ape your betters and wear clothes like they did, they would put you in the stocks! Can you believe it? In early Colonial America where people came to escape religious persecution they would humilate you for trying to dress "outside of your station." That's something the history books never taught us. Anyhow, you have some aristocratic critters in those hats.

That leads me to my next question. Were the so-called witches of Salem upper crust ladies? If they were wearing those hats, they probably were. Oh, and another ancestor was the Rev. Roger Williams who was given the left foot of fellowship from MA and fled to RI whee he established Providence and became RI's first governor. He was a bit of a mouth and got in trouble with the MA authorities for his beliefts. Anyhow, when he left Salem, the witch trials were supposedly held in his house. Those guys were kind of hard on their neighbors.

    XO,

    Sheila

  25. Sorry for all the typos in the previous post, Debbie. I'm on a borrowed IPAD, and I can't make this thing work. I can't see the print for one thing. Just know that your friend has not forgotten how to spell. LOL
