Metamorphosis Monday...My Living Room

Welcome to Metamorphosis Monday with our hostess with the mostest...Susan at Between Naps on the Porch! Be sure to drop by her blog to see what she has been up to and to see a list of this week's participants!

This week, I am going to show you the various stages of my living room over the last 5 months! Yes, only 5 months ago, I got really brave and posted my living room on Rate My Space. Well, I must say that there's nothing like seeing your space out there in front of everybody in the world to make you take a really good look at it! That coffee table is really too much. And six plates??? Is that really necessary?

Time to call in the professionals!! I am going for French country, so of course I must consult the expert!! Would Charles Faudree have six plates over a window?

Hmmmm...it seems not. Over doors, yes. Whew! That's a relief because my doors are all topped with plates, but that's another post! So...I got a new coffee table and a rooster (of course) lamp, then moved the pillows with like colors. Next I took the sleeve off the drapery rod and hung the drapes with rings. Hmmm...still not right. Back to CF (as we Charles Faudree addicts so affectionately call him).

OK...so I added more stuff to the coffee table as per CF, got new pillows and added a birdcage behind the sofa instead of the chair. Ohhh...I can't stand to be plateless, CF or not...so I added three plates!

Get control of yourself, girl! Take down those plates! Edit that table! Move that throw off of the sofa arm! Take out the firewood basket! Here's my attempt at being minimalist. I also changed the curtain rod to a more frenchy looking iron one with frenchified curly cues. And...yes, that is the world's oldest TV...but, hey...it still works!!

And here is how it looks tonight! I added three plates over the door...I just can't control myself in the plate department!! I also brought back the firewood basket simply because I need it and added the stuff back to the table. Whew! I am worn out! If Mr. Faudree is doing any blog whispering, I hope he will approve, but I think this is it for a while! Or maybe I'll just move those plates....

Don't forget to drop by Susan's at Between Naps on the Porch to see more before and afters!!

  1. Debbie, you scared me for a minute!! I was panicked when I saw the plates go away, so glad at least some are back. I think I love the room in all the pictures, is that crazy? You just can't make that room look bad! I try minimalist at times but things always seem to creep back into the picture. Usually plates. Not sure how that happens. lol
    Great room!

  3. Debbie, you are soooo funny! You ALWAYS make me laugh! I can't make up my mind about plates either. I used to have 4 above the double window in my bonus. I didn't like having an even number but it was a set. Anyway, I finally took 'em all down...but I keep eyeing that spot again. LOL I love how you new Frenchy coffee table really grounded the space. I liked your other coffee table but this one really made the room so elegant...in a Frenchy way, of course! I think CF would totally approve! Susan

  6. You know how much I love this room from RMS days! The new coffee table is perfect and I love the beautiful colors, the blue and yellow are so pretty. I'm so happy you can enlarge the pictures and see more of the detail. The birdcage is great, and I still just adore the artwork above the mantle. Thsnks for sharing this. Hugs, Kathy

  7. Debbie~ I think you did a super job of putting your own TOUCHES, as well as taking some tips from CF~ I love seeing what "you" like...and sometimes that means more than those super smart designers like CF... ;) It's great to use them as inspiration...but then, you've put your own twist on it., both in decorating it and in telling your fabulous story! I can see you going back and forth exhausted...you're always so funnY! I love it! ~CC Catherine

  11. I just love your home! I love your plates too! I expected to see a setting on the coffee table. lol You asked about the corset, no, not even finished reading up on it. I had my grandchildren for 3 week or 4 and they will be here bright and early in the morn. I have not had time. To tired, I had a terrible fall a few days ago, black and blue everywhere. Big impact to my chest and head. Hubby told daughter tomorrow last day, that I can't keep it up, and he does not now what is going on with me. But he knows how weary I am at they days end. Off to look at one more of your post then to bed.

  16. Hi Debbie. Your room looks lovely to me on every picture but I know we ladies want to change things now and then. I must say I thought the plates above the window looked very nice. I found this French orientated blog. Don't know if you know it. http://rhondamum.blogspot.com/2009/02/blog-post.html Have a nice day

  21. Love your room in all incarnations! My least favorite was the minimalist period, but what can I say - I live in a Victorian and we "Victorians" like "stuff!" I love the plates!!!! :D Jewel

  22. Hi Debbie,
I love your decorating style! Don't change a thing - I LOVE your plates!! You can never have too many in a room. Your room looks so cozy and inviting no matter HOW you change it - forget minimalism (is that even a word? not in my house LOL) - more is better!

  29. Debbie, I love the way your room evolved and I'm glad you showed us pictures of that happening. The coffee table is great. Where do you get the French Country Decorating magazines? I haven't seen those at WalMart (where I buy all my mags. I guess I need to take a trip to the bookstore. Great job on your room. I love your blog!

  31. Debbie - Love your living room! Biggest improvements: changing the curtain rod and replacing the coffee table. It anchors the space. I love that you will keep all the "stuff" on it - Key thing in any room is that it reflect the owner! We all know how much we enjoy looking at the things we love.

  32. Debbie! Good morning! I got something for you over at my blog so come visit and pick it up! Also I have a comment to make about your living room and your plates and such! Charles Faudree is not a minimalist by any means! You get those plates back out girlfriend! and fill out that coffee table! RMS be darned! Seriously, your room is beautiful! love the new coffee table! and I couldn't help but think of Connie on RMS when I was your rooster lamp with the red shade! But I think the windows look lonesome without their plates! God Bless you today! Lauralu :)

  34. I have plates hung in lots of unusual spots. Over the doors at my house wouldn't work though. Four kids running and slamming... lol

Your living room is lovely! Blessings... Polly

  35. Hi Debbie! I love your living room...and you know, I loved it in each of its various stages, from the beginning to the current look. And you CAN'T go too minimalist on the plates! You ARE a plate addict after all, and the plates look great in your home...you have a knack for arranging them. I love plates, but I haven't progressed from the plate holder on a table look to the wall display. I've gotta get with it! :-) Oh, and I absolutely love your wall color...its beautiful.

  36. I LOVE your house!
Can you please tell me where you got your Country French Decorating Magazines?

  37. Hi Debbie, Thanks for stopping by. I took five years of French and then got to go to Paris for two weeks after my HS graduation. I loved it and had a great time. I could speak the language fluently then but now...so sad, I don't remember much!

  42. How funny you are! Loved all the changes... great Mets for this Monday!
Mr B doesn't understand why once you arrange something why not leave them be.. My brain doesn't work that way. It is constantly seeing and re arranging things differently... I guess thats what we haomemeakers do to feather our nests.

You have a beautiful family room!
Hmmm...I think I am going in to see those plates hanging over our french doors, in our family room, and see if they need to come down or stay...

  47. Debbie, I just love your living room no matter which way you have them. I can remember asking you what happened to the plates when you took them down over the window. I think it is perfect in every one of the photos, but it is fun to change things around. I love the plates on the wall and I have to bug to hang some. What would CF say about that? lol Hugs, Marty

  48. Your room looks fabulouso! I'm glad the plates are above the door. They look great! CF does love a lot of "stuff" (maybe not as much as me, but a lot), so I'm glad you put things back on the coffee table. Those lemons are just the perfect accent color. OOOO, LA, LA, you are SO Frenchy, and I love it. laurie

  51. Debbie,

I was thrilled at your first mention that you had been changing round the living room for 5 months, only because I have been having "change fright" for the last 5 months, so I was looking for courage as I read and you delivered!

I really laughed at the comical way you describe changing and going back. I agree with every move. The plates especially!

Am wondering what you use to hang the plates. Since I have yet to get my china cabinet (and haven't found the space for it!) I need to dust them off and give them a home!

Wonderful post! Also love your furry friends on the sidebar~it is so hard to find good help these days! ;-)

    xoxo

  52. Haha-- great makeover story, and your living room looks good in ALL of the pictures!

I love "CF" -- he has the same dogs I have, so at least I have that particular design element the same as Charles Faudree -- we have matching dog hair on the furniture.

    And I LIKE your plates!

  53. I gave up arguing with myself years ago, when I finally figured out that I was destined to lose no matter what. I just decided to do today what I wanted today and if I changed my mind tomorrow then I could change whatever "it" was tomorrow.

While I mostly leave things as is out of laziness, occasionally I like an idea, shown in a blog, well enough, to make a change in my surroundings.

As opposed to you (I have little taste except in my mouth), I have few original ideas. I think you should "roll with the flow", so to speak, and change things as often as you like. With your GOOD taste, all of the looks are wonderful.
