My Pottery Barn Inspired Fall Mantel

IMG_3751 I am sooo excited! I have decorated my mantel for fall...for the first time ever! I know…unbelievable, but true! I usually only change my mantel at Christmas and then leave it pretty much the same the rest of the year. Want to see?

straight fireplace Here is how it looked on January 1 and that’s how it looked until today…minus the fire! (It’s still waaay too hot for that!) I love my sheep and that print reminds me of a little village in France called Norroy-le-Sec.  But how do you do fall decor around such sunny Provençal colors?

pb mantelI decided to have a look at the Pottery Barn website to see if I could find some inspiration (Yes...I know...I'm a big fat copycat!) and here’s what I discovered…I need a mirror! lol Yes, of course! I can replace my little French village with a mirror and then add seasonal decor through the holidays and into the winter months!

mantel And here it is…my take on the Pottery Barn fall mantel! Of course, it’s not identical because I had to adapt it to my space. I had to use a horizontal mirror because of the configuration of my corner fireplace. And I used old-fashioned orange pumpkins instead of the turban squash. I just like plain old pumpkins. They say fall to me!

IMG_3744 The mirror is from an antique dresser or vanity,  I think. I found it at a flea/antique market for only  $37…not bad! Even the ones at Kmart were $30…and plastic! This one is very heavy and nice. It’s pretty simple and that works well for my little home.

IMG_3750 The garland came from Hobby Lobby…half-price. I love the little gourds! It's a nice, plump garland so it didn’t need anything added. I just plopped it on the mantel!

IMG_3755 The urns were also half-price at Hobby Lobby. I love the lion with a ring in his mouth…so frenchy!

IMG_3754 The wreath was the best deal…only $1.75 at Goodwill! I think no one had noticed it because it was all scrunched and ugly. I simply fluffed it and hung it on the mirror…which helps to make it look even bigger. I think I even like it better than PB’s faux bittersweet wreath…and theirs costs $59!  That’s my kitchen and breakfast nook that you can see around the corner! I think I am going to enjoy my new mantel! I’m excited!

IMG_3770However, our usually inquisitive co-host Baby Kitty was not impressed. He was too busy taking his afternoon nap to pay it too much attention. Maybe tomorrow…

IMG_3751 And there you have it…my new fall mantel!  I think the mirror is my new favorite thing! I am really enjoying watching the reflections change as I walk around the room and seeing the light play as the afternoon sun shines into the house! Can you tell I’ve never had a mirror on the mantel before? lol What can I say…I am easily entertained!

  17. I also got a garland at HL (at 1/2 off!) and decorated my mantle...need to post a pick, it's rather Pottery Barn-ish as well. I added a few faux pears and it looks so real!

  23. Your mantel looks great. I add a couple of fall things and then a couple of Christmas things, but basically my mantel stays the same because I like it the way it is!! I know, set in my ways, huh?

  24. Haha... love that your little helper would rather be napping! So like a cat. My kitty isn't interested in decorating either, but wow, you should see how she bats around a stray leaf that blew in the front door the other day. I don't have the heart to throw it way because she's enjoying it so much.

Happy Fall. Oh, and wonderful mantle makeover.

  30. Debbie -- I LOVE your mantel makeover. I kept hopping between your pictures, and the PB inspiration, and thinking to myself, "Yup, Debbie's is better...."

First off, I LOVE the old fashioned orange pumpkins too. the white, gray, blue, green, whatever pumpkins are a novelty but ... for me, Fall means piles of fat orange pumpkins.

I have a similar mirror, also off an old dresser -- love it! I buy old mirrors when I see them for less than 10-bucks; figure I can always find a place for one more!

As for Thanksgiving here, we usually have 28 to 32 people here for dinner; we've hosted Thanksgiving since the year after we got married! Sometimes we have people we've never met, when a kid or a niece or nephew invites a friend or colleague with no where to go. This year, it's two grad students from Italy, but at least we know one of them already as she stayed with us two years ago.

But Thanksgiving is BIG here, in many ways! I adore it. I start the planning weeks ahead, but don't cook until the last 2 days!

  56. Debbie,
You know what??? Your mantel looks BETTER than Pottery Barn's! Seriously! The round pumpkins are better, so is the garland and mirror. The way the mirror "doubles' the fullness of the wreath is great.
Perfect. And easy to change with the seasons, as you said.

I haven't done the first fallish thing inside. I think I'm going to skip straight to Christmas! A friend of mine did decorate my kitchen table for me, and I did pup a scarecrow and some pumpkins on my porch... but that is IT.
