I just saw Julie & Julia and I had to come straight home to tell you about it! I don’t normally review movies, but this is one you will not want to miss!! It stars the amazing Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as blogger/writer Julie Powell. You are probably familiar with the story line…Julie decides to cook all 524 of Julia’s recipes in Mastering the Art of French Cooking in 365 days…and blog about it!! We get a peek at the lives of the two women who, though separated by time, find courage and direction through cooking. But all you will need to hear is Meryl Streep saying Bon appétit! in Julia’s distinctive voice and you will be hooked!! She does an incredible job of recreating everything Julia…facial expressions, mannerisms, and especially her joie de vivre! Amy Adams is charming as a much less confident Julie who is searching for her identity through Julia’s recipes. You will love the blogger references, as Julie wonders if anyone is even reading her blog and her excitement at getting her first comments! I will buy this one when it comes out on DVD just so I can pause it to study the wonderful array of copper pots, beautiful dishes, and that fabulous farm house sink in Julia’s French kitchen, not to mention the scenes in Paris!! (photos from Sony Pictures)
Soooo… what did I do when I got home??
I pulled out a couple of old friends, long neglected…
…turned to page 315… and started my grocery list!! It’s been a while, so wish me luck!
Ozzie says I need it!!
For the official web site for Julie & Julia, click here. There are even some recipes inspired by the movie!
Good luck with your cooking. There is little I love more than a good beef stew and the variants thereof...

Seriously, good luck with your cooking.. The commercials show this movie to be everything you say it is.. I'm sure my daughter will want to go.. It sure looks good...hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeletewhat a great post....Just blog hopping and stopped at your blog....so glad that I did. I enjoyed your post. I have a GREAT giveaway going through Sunday night...$100 Surprise Gift....with a little Christmas to go along with it.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to see that movie. Thanks for the review and keep us posted on your cooking, too! ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteHi dear friend! Bill and I went to see this earlier today (yes he actually went with me and even enjoyed it!)
ReplyDeleteIt was very good wasn't it? I will say though, I liked the "Julia" part better than the "Julie" part. I would have loved the whole movie based upon her life alone. I think Meryll Streep did an outstanding job! Loved her!
Yep - pulled my cookbook from the shelf too. Maybe Sunday's dinner? Definitely not the aspic. LOL
Hugs, Barb
(aka long lost Blogger friend)
So glad to read this. I want to see the movie (even though Amy Adams hair/wig annoys me). It looks so cute!!! :) Have fun cooking!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this. I'm reading the book now, and I love both of the actresses. I'm glad to hear you give it the 2 thumbs up. So many times the movie doesn't do the book justice. The book is cracking me up! Have fun cooking. laurie
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I just noted on your sidebar that your blog was featured site of the week on a blog I'm not familiar with. How neat is that? Congratulations! laurie
ReplyDeleteLove the way Meryl is spreading those chicken legs Debbie.. I can hear you laughing from here!
ReplyDeleteI did not notice your "thanks" to me over there on the right side bar.
It is my pleasure... so much that I'm keeping you there another week.
Happy cooking mademoiselle.
Love Claudie

You are not going to believe this.
ReplyDeleteI too pulled my cookbooks down off the shelf (I bought them at a flea market long ago) and I too am going to try my hand at the same recipe!
Great minds work together!
Laura
Hi Debbie! Looks like the movie will have a big influence on us bloggers. Will have to get the DVD too. Thanks for the info...Christine
ReplyDeleteDebbie, thanks for the review! I've been away on vacation, and noticed that the movie came out today. We are big fans of Julia Child in this house! A few years ago we had the fun of attending a cooking class with Julia at the Greenbrier. It was a treat of a life time! Good luck with dinner. Hope to see some photos.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how expensive it would be to cook through the book every day.
ReplyDeleteThat being said why not go for it. What fun.
Thanks for the heads up on this, Debbie! I want to see it because I loved Julia Child and adore Meryl Streep, too.
ReplyDeleteSomething is winging it's way to Georgia. Be on the lookout!
XO,
Sheila :-)
The movie looks so good, but sometimes they're not... Thanks for confirming this is a good one to see. So how did you dish turn out??? ☺ diane
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie, thanks for the review. I must go see that movie. I laughed when I saw Julia spread that chickens legs. Great.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that the movie is good. I'll probably wait until it comes to the dollar theater to see it. I read the book and enjoyed it, but didn't love it. I'll probably like the movie much better.
ReplyDeleteI have not been to a movie theater in years, but buzzed out with my daughter Anne to Julia and Julie yesterday -- first matinee!
ReplyDeleteLoved it. Streep is brilliant capturing Julia Child, and the blogging references made me laugh out loud -- although Anne pointed out, "No pictures!"
I feel like cooking today. I hope my houseguests are not fussy eaters!
Cass
Hi Debbie, be sure to let us know how dinner turned out - was Ozzie your sous chef?
ReplyDeleteI read both books LOVED My Life in France. My immediate thought upon finishing the book was I wished I had the opportunity to have met Julia - what an interesting and full life she had.
I had great expectations for Julie & Julia and the book was a real disappointment.
I thought it was an interesting premise of blending the two books into a movie. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it so much! I'll be seeing it myself as well so I'll have to let you know what I thought!
Have a great weekend!
XOXOXO, Bonnie
Oh Debbie that's Lucky I must send you another pic of him that is so precious.

Hi Debbie
ReplyDeleteI blogged about this movie awhile ago as I'm a big Meryl Streep fan, but unfortunately I wasn't able to go to the opening weekend.... I'm so excited to see it!
I picked an easy recipe, Leek Soup from my copy of "Mastering the Art Of French Cooking"...lol...hope your beef comes out as good as Julia's!
Your kitties are so cute! :-)

ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the review! I can't wait to see the film...but am waiting for a rainy or a really hot day so I don't feel guilty about not working in the garden.
Thanks so much for joining me on my journey in southwest France. I appreciate your encouragement and support. Your comments are so appreciated!
Best to you,
Debbykay at Rose Cottage Gardens and Farm
Saw it this weekend and absolutely loved every minute of it. A little disappointed that the real Julia didn't like the blogger though...I thought she was precious.
ReplyDeleteI turned to my copy of volume 1 many times for her recipe for scalloped potatoes.
