DIY Mini Herb Garden with Chalkboard Plant Markers

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Mini Herb Garden with DIY Chalkboard Plant MarkersSummer will be here before you know it and one of the things I love about it is being able to cook with fresh herbs! Sooo….. I decided that this year I would have my own little garden with all of my favorites! That way I don't have to make a run to the grocery store every time I need herbs. (I know…please don’t judge! ) And while I was at it, I thought I would make it cute and fun and use some more of my favorites…galvanized goodies and chalkboard touches!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Mini Herb Garden suppliesHere’s what you will need for the mini herb garden:
  • Small galvanized tub (mine came from the farm supply store)
  • Your favorite herbs
  • Purchased pot filler (mine came from Walmart) or stones to allow for drainage
  • Potting soil

And here’s what you will do:
  1. Fill the bottom of the tub with about an inch of stones or use a purchased pot filler cut to fit to allow for better drainage.
  2. Add the plants arranged so that the taller herbs are toward the back.
  3. Fill in with potting soil.

Here’s what you will need:
  • Mini chalkboards (mine came from Jo-Ann with 3 in a pack)
  • 12 inch long  x 3/16 inch wooden dowels (mine came from Walmart)
  • Chalk or chalk marker (also from Walmart) or permanent paint pen if you plan to leave them outside in a covered area. I wouldn’t leave them directly in the rain.
  • Chalkboard Duck tape (also from Walmart)
  • Hot glue gun

  1. Remove the little loop from the chalkboards using nail clippers to be sure to get all of it.
  2. Measure to find the center, mark with a pencil and run a bead of hot glue along that line. Add the dowel and hold until the glue is firm.
  3. Add the names of your herbs.
  4. Place the markers in your little garden container.
  5. Write "Herbs" on a length of the chalkboard Duck tape with the marker and affix to the tub.
Enjoy!

And I love the look of the little galvanized tub with the chalkboard touches, too! A garden might as well be cute!

  5. So cute! I have been planting my "herb gardens" for the past few years in old galvanized tubs I got for free from a neighbor, but those markers would really dress it up!
