Easy No-Sew Shirt Pumpkins

I’m excited to join some very talented bloggers again today for the fall edition of our No-Sew Decorating Showcase!  Once again, I have put away my sewing machine to create my project…no-sew shirt pumpkins!

This one is so super-easy and fun that kids could even join in! Here’s what you will need:

• Long-sleeved shirt
• Jute twine
• Rubber bands
• Fiberfill for stuffing
• Mod Podge
• Scissors
• Foam brush
• Pencil
• Scrap of burlap

Our first step was to check the closet and the thrift stores for some fall-colored shirts. Our CEO Ozzie chose this one because she thinks the colors look like her! And don’t feel bad about cutting it up…I have plans for the rest of it, too, so stay tuned!

First I have to ask you to forgive the long tutorial. It’s really not hard…the teacher in me just likes detailed instructions. lol Just read it through first and I think you will agree that it’s easy. Here’s what I did:

1. Cut a section of the shirt sleeve so that it is straight on both ends. One end will be wider than the other.

2. Cut 6 lengths of jute twine that are a little longer than the sleeve section.

3. Turn the sleeve inside out, tie all six of the strands together with one knot and insert the twine so that the knot protrudes from the wider end.

4. Gather up the sleeve end and secure with a rubber band.

5. Turn the sleeve right side out.

6. Stuff the sleeve with the fiberfill until it is rather plump.

7. Gather up the sleeve end and the twine pieces, spacing them as much as possible, and secure tightly with another rubber band.

8. Now you are ready to adjust your pumpkin and make it take shape! Just tug on each of the twine pieces until you have achieved the look of pumpkin sections and then tie them off two at a time. You can also pull up the sleeve end to help smooth the pumpkin.

9. Using another length of twine (I waited to cut it until I was through, so the length will vary), tie a knot around the rubber band, leaving several inches of twine at the end. Begin wrapping the twine around the fabric. This will be your stem.

10. Wind the twine back down and then tie a knot with the other end.

 Now you are ready to add the extra touches! You will have six or more twine ends to work with, so you can finish them off in several different ways. Important…do NOT cut them off! Your pumpkin will look like an apple if you do! lol

11. You may choose to unwind some of them and even separate them even further to create the look of corn silks (Hey, I know this is a pumpkin, but I think it looks cute!)

12. You can create tendrils by covering the pumpkin with aluminum foil and coating several of the twine ends with Mod Podge. Then wind them around a pencil and let them dry about 15 minutes. Remove the pencil at this point or it will stick!

13. Reshape the tendrils, let them finish drying, then remove the aluminum foil.

14. You may also add leaves. I cut them from burlap and coated them with Mod Podge to prevent them from raveling. When they are dry, just attach them with hot glue.

15. And there you have it! You can vary them…some with tendrils, some without, etc, for a different look.

Aren’t they fun? Since much of the supplies came from my stash, they were practically free! And I didn’t have to sew a stitch to create them! You will be seeing them again in my fall home tour on September25th, so be sure to come back then to see what I did with them!
