Have you realized that Thanksgiving is three weeks from today? It’s time for me to start planning my tablescape and working on possible centerpieces! My favorite element to use as the star of my Thanksgiving decor is my dough bowl…a cherished heirloom from my grandmother! This year I have decided to fill it with my favorites…old-fashioned traditional pumpkins!
It’s a beautiful day…warmer and sunny after days of chilly, overcast weather…and our scheduled co-host Miss Kitty has decided to play hooky and have a little romp on the monkey bars instead! Looks like we will have to proceed without her! 
The central element of the arrangement is this wonderful long-stemmed pumpkin that I found during our family visit to the pumpkin farm. Love it! 
I have surrounded it with faux bittersweet, dried magnolia pods and acorns…
…plus these cute little mini-pumpkins with their fabulous little tendrils! I couldn’t resist them and came home with a stash of these from the pumpkin farm as well!
Nothing says fall and Thanksgiving to me like traditional orange pumpkins! Now just add a little mini Indian corn on the side and a blue and white double happiness jar filled with eucalyptus and there you have it!
Here’s a look at some of the other ways I have filled my dough bowl in the past, as well as my current centerpiece. Since my dough bowl doesn’t have a flat bottom, I put dried black-eye peas in the bottom when I use candles to help anchor them. However, this year I decided to omit the candles and go for all natural elements.
I really like the contrast of the blue and white with the pops of orange…a little non-traditional color combination…

Here’s one last look at my dough bowl…ready for Thanksgiving! Now…I need to start thinking about my tablescape! I already have a few little ideas in my head! How about you? Love the filled dough bowl. Lucky you to find that long stemmed pumpkin. They are usually broken off. Your dining room looks great.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I like the way you filled the dough bowl. The long stemmed pumpkins are so interesting. Be certain to save those stems once the pumpkin is ready to toss. You can use them for velvet pumpkins next season. It's not often you find good long stems. ;-)

ReplyDeleteIts gorgeous Deb, and I also always try to look for the pumpkins with the longest stems too. But yours is a winner for sure cause that is one long stem. LOL I love your magnolia pods. I don't have any of those but sure wish I did. BTW, sorry I did not get your goodies out before we went to the mountains. They are on the way being shipped out tomorrow. :) xxoo

This looks wonderful, Debbie...I really like the one with the candles. Never thought of using coffee beans to secure the candles. I have an old dough bowl I got on Ebay a few months ago. The only thing it has held is a rolling pin! lol! I am seriously creatively challenged! Thanks for the ideas!

I just did a post on the past few Tday tables and it actually forced me to start thinking about my own for this year. I love how that works sometimes. We write for others and it winds up inspiring us!!

ReplyDeleteDo the cats ever 'mistake' the acorns or smaller items for toys? I think that unless I glued them all down, I'd have pieces scattered everywhere. And any wonderfully long-stemmed pumpkin - well, that stem would make one a perfect handle to carry with.
Your dough bowl looks so good..love the long "handled" pumpkins and your hutch. It's great with the blue and white and little round pumpkins. I really need to get busy..the kids will be here in two weeks. Yikes!

Hadn't seen dried magnolia pods before...wonderful texture! We will be GOING to our son and daughter~in~laws for Thanksgiving this year. For our friends and families on the East Coast, Thanksgiving will hold a deeper meaning for them...thankful for the gift of life and things that are still useable. My prayers continue for them in their aftermath. Have a blessed weekend!

I think this will be the year,as more than ever, I miss the family I used to have when I was a little girl. You always do such creative things with yours! Love the dough bowl - I have one from my grandmother who (according to my mom) brought it with her from Norway at the turn of the last century. I never thought to use dried Magnolia pods - what a great idea. Love your blog and read it faithfully.

I like all the ways you used the dough bowl! I have a friend who makes wooden bowls. I am putting this on my Pinterest Center Piece board! As soon as the weather cools off some, I'm decorating for fall. Kind of hard too when it is 95 degrees. lol
