Collecting Clay Cookers...and a Recipe

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Collecting Clay Cookers...and a RecipeHere’s something you may not know about me…I love clay cookers! They have wonderful texture and color and add a little touch of whimsy to my home. I began collecting them about three years ago and have been adding a few as I go along…especially when I see one that really calls my name…

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Duck Cooker …like this fun duck-topped cooker that I found recently. Gotta love him! They were all Goodwill finds and most of them were under $5.00! If you aren’t familiar with clay cookers, they were all the rage in the early 1980s…a time when I was busy with a new-born and missed out on them.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Collecting Clay Cookers Sooo…I have spent the last three years making up for lost time and adding to my collection. You can read more about my cookers and how I got started collecting them by clicking here and here.

Baby Kitty's Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu ParisHere’s something else that you may not know…Baby Kitty has Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu Paris! Yes…he is very proud of his hard work and even followed in the footsteps of his idol…Julia Child…and began his own cooking show which he aptly titled…Catatouille! lol

Hungarian Chicken Paprika He has even recreated one of his favorite dishes for the clay cooker in honor of this post…Hungarian Chicken Paprika! You can find a link to his recipe by clicking here. You will not believe how tender and juicy the clay cooker makes the chicken…and it even browns it! Thanks, Chef Baby Kitty!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Collecting Clay Cookers Here’s a final look at my little clay cooker collection…at home on the lower shelf of my breakfast area wine rack…love it! How about you? Have you ever cooked with a clay cooker?

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed having a little peek at my clay cooker collection! Please visit these wonderful bloggers and their beautiful blogs to see what they are up to and to find a list of this week’s participants!

  2. Thanks for this reminder of a wonderful way to cook. My clay cooker sits in the cabinet over my fridge, never used anymore, but one of those things fondly remembered and once used to make some great recipes. Being a lover of Chicken Paprika, I must try this version! Sue

  3. I cooked in one years ago, but not for a long time. I need to get mine out and use it again. You do have a fabulous collection. Love the one with the duck. Hugs, Marty

  4. I've seen most of them individually while on our GW hunting, but altogether it makes a really nice collection. Love the duck......aflack! Linda

  5. I've never used a clay cooker but I'm always up for trying something new..or old as is the case with these. Best of all, they are a beautiful decorating accessory!

  6. The cookers are really neat Debbie (love the duck), can't believe you're finding them at Goodwill! I believe I spy a pig too:@)

  7. What a fun collection! I see these frequently at thrift stores but have never used one. I might just have to give one a try!

  8. You have quite the collection of clay bakers, Debbie...I see one every now and then while out thrifting, but never thought of them as being something to collect. I have a couple clay cazuelas that I love to bake in...and my latest is a small Digoin baking dish that I use to make enchiladas in...looking for another one on the cheap, like this one that only set me back $2.99!
    Have a wonderful week...

  11. I am intrigued by clay cookers but have never used one. I think my Mom had one but gave it to my daughter...I wonder what happened to it? I would love to give it a try sometime. Your collection is charming!

  12. Oh- I DO remember using my own years ago. That is a great collection you have going. I think I sold the one I had at a garage sale. I would have given it to you-but now I like the thought of cooking in one again. lol xo Diana

  13. I was born in 1986, so I missed the clay cooker fad entirely! I love them though, how cute.
I saw a mention of Georgia on your blog... I'm originally from Macon, but I lived most of my life in Newnan, and a few years in Columbus, and I now live in Cartersville! So I'm a GA gal born and bred, too!
I adore your thrifted style, I think we're kindred spirits.

  15. I bake with my Römer Topf (Clay Pot) often. No knead breads and chicken with rice are some of our favorites.

  16. Back in the 80's I had one of the best meals I ever had which was cooked in a clay pot. Oh yes, the 80's when I was much younger and dating. Can't remember the man's name but the meal he made and his house I remember.

  17. I want to know where your Goodwill store is. You get all kinds of great stuff. Love the clay pots.

  18. I have seen these in the store, but apparently I must have been changing diapers or something because I missed the whole era. I have a brown crock that my mil gave me years ago, I think it is called a bean pot, or an original slow cooker. I saw that they are now collectors items. Who knew?

  20. Well, they are beautiful and this inspires me to start collecting them and cooking with them--after all, it's got the Baby Kitty--Cordon Bleu stamp of approval:) They remind me of Indian tagines--similar clay cooking pot with lid. I've always wanted to try it--now will have to keep my eyes open for them when I'm out thrifting :)

  22. Debbie, I remember when you first started buying these cookers. I've seen some at GW, but didn't bring them home. I love the textures that your collection offers to your bakers rack. They offer a wonderful look for a French Country kitchen. You were wise to start buying these. '-) Great assortment!

  23. Hello. I've never seen any clay cookers in Britain. They must be very old fashioned so is popular. I love them so much. They look so pretty together.
Thank you for the lovely post.
    Best wishes

  24. I have a clay cooker that is a bit of a modern shape. It's not glazed inside, which is my preference. But, embarrassingly, I've only ever roasted whole chickens in it. I should spread out more. :)

    Great post, btw!

  25. Baby kitty has shamed me into confessing I long ago used my clay cooker for a planter! I remember as a young bride cooking a mean lemon rosemary chicken in mine! Love the idea of a collection.

  26. Oh don't they look pretty sitting on the metal wine rack. I've never seen a cookbook for them--nice that you have that.

  27. What a cool collection... I have seen them around, and will now look at them in another light.

  28. I missed out on them in the 80s, too. Your collection is neat, especially the duck and hen ones. I may have to look for one the next time I'm out and about. I'd love to try a chicken in one...and I'm sure Baby Kitty could give me some pointers, especially since he has his
Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu Paris! :)

  29. I copied the recipe to use in my clay cooker. I like that you have them displayed because they take up too much room to store. I'm going to keep my eye out next time I'm thrifting. (as if I need one more thing to collect!)

  33. I have several clay cookers and had NO idea they were trendy in the 70s! I, too, was raising children and that craze must have totally passed me by. My daughter in law was teasing me recently about all my collections. Unless I find a chicken like yours I think I may send the ones I have to the Goodwill to let someone else start a collection!

  34. Hello there. I just found you and need to continue browsing:) I too have 'several' clay cookers. I LOVE THEM! I just found another one yesterday - nope I'm not fibbing. It has a duck top with the head turned back kinda like you rooster one. They are useful too - love using them.

  35. Oh! I love your collection of clay cookers! I have seen them at thrift stores but never paid attention to them because on their own they look so... dated... or something. But when you put them all together in this lovely collection, how fun!
