My Shabby Picnic Basket Planter and More Old Favorites on the Patio

IMG_2464My patio is up and running this year and includes some old favorites…such as my shabby picnic basket planter which is making its third appearance! Love it…and so do the begonias. It was made from a $3.93 Goodwill find!  It had gotten a little too shabby and needed a little freshening up, so I repeated the original painting process. Directions for making it can be found here.

040My little flower pot man is back…sporting a moss rose hair-do for summer. He stood up the first summer, but is sitting down again this year.

027The little water feature is back also. I just love the sound of water…so soothing! Miss Kitty loves it, too, since she considers it her personal drinking fountain!

IMG_2456By mid-summer, the water hyacinths will be blooming…breathtaking! But…each bloom opens at night and only lasts one day!

kitty And of course, the catnip is back! However, this year I have had to cage it thanks to this neighbor who bit each plant all the way down to the dirt and killed them all last year! Naughty fellow! My staff hardly got to enjoy it at all! I’ll take it out when the staff and I are enjoying the patio.

pageHere’s the lovely Miss Kitty acting goofy over the catnip year before last! Does it make her high? I don’t think so. She’s just goofy! She even acts like a fool over strawberries as you may recall!

IMG_1521And perhaps the best of all…the ginger lilies beside the patio are also up and growing! By fall they will be blooming again like this! I think it is one of the sweetest fragrances around…and so it seems do the hummingbird moths! I’ll be waiting for them to make their annual appearance! Do you have special favorites on your porch or patio that make an appearance each year?

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed a little peek at my patio! Please visit these wonderful bloggers and their beautiful blogs to see what they are up to and to find a list of this week’s participants!

  3. What a terrific basket/planting project. I am going to check that out next.
I looked out one day and found the neighbor cat rolling all over the cat nip. No sense of boundaries with cats. Silly.
I love how they rub their faces on things. Darling pictures!
Of course Miss Kitty knows that the fountain is there...for her!

  5. Your patio is like a cocktail lounge for Miss Kitty. Drinks and I'm not sure what we should call catnip! Good for her. The cage over the catnip cracked me up!

  25. I would have to cage in my wicker sofa because an elderly neighbor's cat loves to come and sleep on it and mess it up with mud! So annoying. I told her dau about it, the darn thing ruined a new cover I had made for it. She just lets it run lose all the time. Now I have to pile the wicker tables on top of it every night as my little gson is severely allergic. I tried the moth balls too.
Ok, off my rant about irresponsible pet owners!

Your picnic basket planter looks wonderful and your portulaca headed man is adorable!
We still have to wait for the pollen invasion to end so we can set up the porch. You Southern gals are so ahead of us Yankees! :)

  32. Beautiful, Debbie. My day lilies are in bloom and so is the ginger plant. It didn't freeze this year, which allows it to bloom. It's gorgeous.

  33. Debbie, what a cute potman...I should give this a try, I am sure I have enough pots in the garage. You should buy catmint not cat nip, they are not the same. My cats and indeed the neighbor cats never eat it. They roll and the big feral cat "Louis" just sits and smells it, it reyurns every year bigger each time.

A few years ago,I planted cat nip for my two cats and the neighbor cat pulled them out roots and all, so I know what kind of varmit you're dealing with :)

  37. Your basket planter is beautiful again this year and I loved the picture of Miss Kitty enjoying the fountain. We have a cat that looks just like your marauding neighbor, but our Trixie is inside only, and lives in Houston, so she's pleading not guilty for this particular offense!
