Lanterns and Pumpkins...My Fall Porch!

IMG_3700 We are sweltering here in Georgia, so last weekend I decorated my porch so I could at least pretend that fall has come! This year, I decided to use lanterns and pumpkins as my theme. I have fallen in love with lanterns because you can use them as accents in any season and they will fit right in!

my lanterns Here is my fall porch last year when I used a Pottery Barn inspired theme with them. (Click here to see more.) I found out a few important things…candles do not do well in the full sun on my little porch and candy corn does not make a good filler! lol Blowing rain turns it into a gooey mess that is almost impossible to remove!

page2 So this year I decided to use only things that will not melt in my lanterns and pumpkins seemed like the obvious choice! A trip to Burt’s Pumpkin Farm in the north Georgia mountains gave me lots of wonderful varieties to choose from!

IMG_3695 I filled this lantern with some gorgeous little tiger striped pumpkins along with a white one. I really like the  way they look! Now if they will just hold up…I’ll keep you posted!

IMG_3680 Another lantern was filled with miniature Indian corn tied with some jute twine…love it! But something’s missing!

IMG_3696 It’s leaves! Now it’s starting to look like fall! Don’t laugh, but the ones I added are faux since we don’t have any…yet!

IMG_3697 Here’s how things look on the other side of my small porch…more of the same in different sizes. I seem to have bought mostly traditional orange pumpkins in spite of the selection at the pumpkin farm. It just contrasts better with my porch surface.

IMG_3692 Here’s my one little nod to Halloween!  I will pull it up on November first and leave the rest of the decorations. It’s just so much easier for me to decorate for fall and leave it up until Thanksgiving!

IMG_3691 Now for the wreath! I wanted a new one with more punch this year, so I decided to make it. I started with a $1.00 grapevine wreath from Goodwill and added a garland of leaves leftover from several years ago. Finally, I added two little swags that were half price at Michael’s and…voilĂ !

porch And finally…here it is! Do you think that Artie and Marty will count this as a vignette? I hope so! lol All I need is some nice, cool temperatures and I’ll believe fall has arrived!

  2. Debbie, ha ha, totally know what you mean about it being hot. What's up with that, last week, I took out all our winter clothes, it was actually chill in the morning, here in GA, then this week my kids want their shorts again. Oh well, back to your decore, it's beautiful. The lanterns are awesome, and I also love how they can change with the seasons. Yeay, candy and candles bad idea, thanks for learning that lesson for the rest of us. Everythign turned out great, and the fake leaves, hilarious. Trees here, are already changing colors, and dropping leaves, Gwinnett county!! I would love if you stop by, and link up to either of my parties. This is lovely, and I would love to have you. Thanks Bella :)

Thanks for the ideas, it's looking very festive around your place!
I wish you could see our front yard right now. The leaves are piled so thick it would make you giggle!
We have a lot of raking to do!
It's been warm here too but now it's going to be seasonable.

  6. I'm with you...GA is a bit slow with fall this year! I'm in NW GA and the leaves are just starting to turn...now if the weather would cool off, we could have a fire in the fireplace!

  7. This looks beautiful Debbie. Maybe Mother Nature will take the hint :) I love the lanterns, and the pumpkins and Indian corn are beautiful fillers.
It's been hot here too. It cooled off last week, but now we are right back in the 80's and 90's. Hope you have a great week. Hugs, Kat

  10. It's barely felt like fall where I live either, so I put stuff up just so I wouldn't miss the season.

Love how you put the unexpected pumpkins in the lanterns. I think they show up much better than the candles and candy anyway.

  13. I love your holiday decor, very, very pretty. You have great taste. May I just offer a couple of ideas for you to help enhance what you already have.

I think you need to vary the height of the items so they can all be seen better. I would elevate the things in a step pattern coming down from the door to the walk. I would elevate the topiaries and include a few dried or fake flowers or something else colorful in the topiaries to make them stand out. You might want to check at Michael's for their little bales of hay that were on sale in my neck of th woods for $5.99. They are great for lifting and elevating and add nice fall texture. Thanks for sharing your great taste with us.

  21. Great idea with those lanterns! I feel your pain girl it stays hot here in Texas this time of year too. Thankfully this year it has been cooler but still no pretty fall leaves or chilly breezes to inspire so have to pretend and decorate anyway. I like to turn the ac down really cool and burn a pumpkin spice candle to help me get in the mood. lol.

  36. Hi Debbie...

My friend, your entrance looks absolutely autumn delcious! I love the big lanterns...they look fabulous! I guess that I hadn't thought about it...but I suppose the candles and candy doesn't do well in the south this time of the year! Wishing you some cooler temps, my friend! But I will say...that from looking at your pretty porch...all dressed up in its fall finery...one would never guess that it was still very warm there! Anyway, this is just a fab combination...those awesome lanterns filled with autumn pretties, the pumpkins, and those beautiful yellow mums!!! Ohhh...and your wreath turned out sooo pretty as well! Thanks for sharing your pretties with us today, Debbie! This is gorgeous!!!

    Warmest autumn wishes,

  37. Debbie, this is such an inviting fall look for your porch. I love the lanterns. At first glance, that corn gives the look of flames inside the lantern. Your wreath turned out sooo pretty, and I can't believe how inexpensively you made that. Thanks for linking your pretty Fall porch to Favorite Things Sat. laurie

  44. Debbie, I love it! It looks so cute and so very fallish! I had to laugh about the candy corn, LOL! I can't have it out due to "visitors" that might sneak up and trick or treat me from the Mantazas River. ;-)

I have been thinking of you a lot lately. I have a mother squirrel who is so much fun to watch, and she has the "squirreliest" bunch of teeangers you have ever seen. They provide endless hours of entertainment in our back yard. I have to watch my friend Maxi next door, she of the Baby Kitty persuasion, lest she decide she needs to take trophies. ;-)

    Love you...

    Sheila :-)

So...I am glad that you still have your frenchy playlist, because I will have it softly playing in the background! Do you have any suggestions on EASY french appetizers or desserts?
