Thrifting Finds in Creams and Naturals

plates w twine This post is a real departure for me, as you will soon see…

IMG_1298 …which is not to say that there will not be cats and plates, because there will be…

IMG_1397_redo …but because I am straying from my usual blues and yellows for the creams…

page …naturals and textures that I love seeing on other blogs!  Not that I am planning on redecorating my house, because I’m not. I just want to try it on for size in a small way. And…as my friend and Goodwill hunting partner, Linda  at Nina’s Nest pointed out to me…most of my GW trophies this week seem to fall into that pattern!

page1First, I have finally collected enough wonderful old silverplated flatware to have eight complete place settings…mismatched, of course! I was looking for one more odd dinner fork and instead found another whole bag of a dozen or so lovely old assorted pieces. I was thrilled to also find a stack of six crazed, chipped and much loved  vintage Wedgewood Wellesley square luncheon plates for $4.54my new favorite find!

IMG_1359-1 I love the well-worn and intricate designs of the flatware…little dings and all! Look at the morning glories in the top design…sigh! They just don’t make patterns like that any more! And doesn’t it look wonderful with my “new”  plates? Don’t you love the raised band of fruit and circles?

finials I have added another GW find…this pussy willow wreath ($3.53)… and some fleur-de-lis finials from Dollar Tree with a little jute twine thrown in for good measure! The cake plate is a flea market find from last year.

IMG_1396I found this coffee/tea pot on eBay during my recent quest for more Red Cliff ironstone. It is identical to one that I bought recently, but this one has no top and only cost $3.87! I decided that for that price, I could use it as a vase or pitcher!

IMG_1385 Linda found this basket at GW and grabbed it for me since she already  has one. It’s from Southern Living at Home and was only $3.53! I added some jute gauze from Michael’s ($3.99 for 10 feet) for a little interest.

IMG_1390I’m using it to hold the glasses, which were my mother’s, the flatware and…

IMG_1401 …these great vintage-looking napkins, which actually came from the clearance aisle at Home Goods last year…99 cents each! The little design looks like another morning glory, too!

IMG_1253 And then I took this fleur-de-lis finial that I found at GW for 99 cents and transformed it into…

IMG_1365this with some white spray paint! I love me some spray paint! I didn’t coat it too heavily, though, because I liked the way the gold was showing through just a little. I think the finial adds some of the frenchiness that I seem to require…

IMG_1308 …as does this lantern…a GW find from last year…and the homemade vintage style tag (directions here) keeping the fleur-de-lis theme!

IMG_1356 Soooo…put it all together and you have a luncheon using creams and naturals! I don’t think I could abandon my Provençal blues and yellows, but it is a nice change! And…I did it all with thrifting finds!

IMG_1377 Baby Kitty is puzzled that I am so excited about other people’s stuff, as is my nine-year old grandson, but somehow brand new stuff with no patina or cracks just isn’t the same! Someone else had done all of the work of breaking it in for me and all I have to do is love it! And…I might add…virtually nothing on this table cost over $5.00! Now I think that’s something to get excited about!

  4. Debbie, I am like you I won't abandon the colors in my house, but I have been buying white coffee and tea pots, creamers, and silver coffee pots and old books. I will be sharing these things soon. I love how you have your new finds displayed with the twine and jute. Very pretty. Love you silverware, too.

  5. Debbie, you find some of the best things. I love your new plates, they are gorgeous and your flatware is beautiful. What a super idea to put the glasses and silver in the basket and it is just gorgeous too. Love the pitcher. See, the white goes so well with all your blue and yellow, so it still all matches. Cute idea to tie the jute around the fleu de lis. (spelling) I hope you had a super Easter. Hugs, Marty

  6. Absolutely love it all! I've been craving more white lately and this is just a gorgeous presentation. I have that same Southern Living basket and love it- I've used ribbon, fabric, and burlap depending on the event- you'll get tons of use from it. Great post!

  10. I can not believe you paid $3.53 for that Southern Living Home basket!!! I paid $50 for mine! And what's worse I rarely use it. It's on the bathroom counter now. I guess Alabama thrifting is just not as good as Georgia thrifting. Happy Easter.

  11. Debbie, I love your Fleur de lis finial from the GW and the smaller ones from the $ store look so cute wrapped in jute. Nothing like classic white to change things up. Great bargain on the SL basket, too! So many ways to change it up.
I am chomping at the bit to go shopping. Hopefully the estate sales will begin soon. :-)

Two thumbs up on your departure into shabby chic whiteness. I stalk my local thrift stores for many of these same items and you have given me a new ideas to use on them. The twine is clever wrapped around the dollar store finials and thanks for linking the instructions to the hanging tag.

  35. Debbie, I totally agree with you. I like things with age and patina and a story. Your new plates are a terrific find, and I do like the mismatched silver. I'm working on doing the same, but I think the GW in your town tends to have more interesting finds that here in my town. Not that I haven't found some great deals! Love the way you mixed in the twine and burlap. Great look!

You have the most wonderful treasures Debbie, and I love the way you've displayed your finds with the jute string, candles in your pretty pitcher, and the net inside the carrier. Love the painted fleur dis lis and the tag I'm convinced you can find the best treasures and make them look the best.
