Frenchy Finds...and...Another Bouillotte Lamp!

IMG_1474I am sooo excited about this week’s finds! They run the gamut from chippy to shiny as you will see! However, I am saving the best for last…so first I will show you this mirror that I bought about a year ago at a lighting outlet near me. It just looked so frenchy that I couldn’t pass it up! However, something always seemed to be missing, so I added the pussy willow wreath that I showed you a couple of weeks ago.

page I also added a jute bow for a little more texture. I love the layers of paint…giving a really old look to a new mirror! However, it was still missing something. Then, last week I found what I had been looking for…

IMG_1519 …a chippy old half table to go below and anchor it! And…wonder of wonders…it was already the right color!  I topped it off with the books and fleur-de-lis finial from another post plus…

page1 …the top portion of a topiary I had dismantled to paint but loved what I found underneath. I think I like the bare bones better than the original look…what about you?

IMG_1521 I wanted to experiment with the chippy look without re-doing a whole room, so this vignette in my hall will fill the bill for now! And now for my favorite find

IMG_1504 …another bouillotte lamp! Woo hoo! You may remember my post from several weeks back where I showed you my new bouillotte lamp and offered a little lesson on their history. (Forgive the French teacher in me, please!) Well…Linda at Nina’s Nest and I were on our usual Goodwill hunting expedition when we tried a new thrift store. We were just about to leave empty-handed when from the other side of the store a little voice was calling my name…

page …a wonderful double arm bouillotte lamp…adjustable metal shade, long shaft with a key and lots of Napoleonic style!! I put on my best poker face and asked…How much for this lamp? The manager checked it out and said…Oh$15. Whaaaat??? I silently did the happy dance, paid and ran out of the store screaming “Start the car!” lol

IMG_1502Why? you may ask, dear readers…because this is a very heavy, very nice. very expensive lamp…probably at least $300-$400 originally!  Its only sin…it’s brass! That’s OK with me. Bouillotte lamps are classics and have survived as is for over 200 years. They will survive current trends. And in the meantime…I will be on the lookout for more of them!

  1. Hi Deb - I grabbed a coffee and sat down to see if you had posted this weekend. Ahhhh....another gorgeous post. My husband would arm-wrestle you for the lamp and I love the mirror. Love that cat picture behind the lamp too. I would go with the 'bare-bones', for sure. You sure do find great stuff. Have a great Sunday and look forward to next weeks finds. Hugs, Deb =^..^= x 6

  2. Hi Debbie! I just typed a comment and it disappeared! Ugh!! Well, I love your beautiful mirror and the wreath is gorgeous! Looks like a magazine picture. You found another lamp? Oh, this is gorgeous. You must have some wonderful shops around you. I love seeing your home and wish you'd show more of it.
    Be a sweetie,

  6. The mirror is gorgeous! And the topiary really looks sharp in front of it on the table. I like the grapevine look of it. Some great finds!

  7. Deb, I'm cracking up at the vision of you yelling "Start the Car!!" LOL :-) Too funny!

Would you believe I gave away a bouillotte lamp to GW when we moved? I could just cry now. Who knows why I do such stuff. *sigh* I am making a new rule that I'm never cleaning out again. Everytime I throw something away, I turn around & want/need/look for it a few years later.

The mirror looks lovely with its new sisters surrounding her. You do have a wonderful eye for Frenchify things. Congrats on all your purchases.

  9. That does it, I am headed to Georgia, Debbie! I truly think I am in the wrong part of the country...I can't believe the quality and variety of items in your thrift stores. The little half table is so perfect under that gorgeous mirror. I am so glad that you are the person to have spotted the bouillotte lamp...someone else probably wouldn't appreciate it for what it is.
    Have a great week!

  12. Debbie, I love your mirror and the wreath and jute bow are just perfect hanging in front of it. I can't believe you found the perfect table to go with it. Love the topiary taken down to the bare bones, it looks fabulous. The books are also perfect with the finials. Great vignette. Now for that lamp. It is a fabulous find. I love that it is brass. I guess I am still behind the times, but I love the sparkle of brass and thing it just lights up any room. Not too good about following all the trends. It really is a beautiful lamp. Thanks so much for joining the party this week. Love you, hope you have a super week. Hugs, Marty

I am a little bit green here in Calif. You are the trifting queen. I like the way you are trying out the chippy look in small doses just to see how it feels to you. You do it so well, that vignette is perfect!! Love you,Kathysue

Go Shiny Brass. You are so right, it will survive current trends. Hubby and I both love it. I'm sure you saw my frenchy brass chandelier post. (We're not talking 80's builders' brass light fixtures here!)

    The lamp? Lucky you!

  22. Yes! Love the topiary with its bare bones look. So pretty! I have a very similar table on my upstairs landing. It was a wedding gift to my grandmother in 1936. :)

  27. Well, you've done it again! I'm in awe of your eagle eye, Miss Plate Addict. How I'd love to discover one of these lamps for $15. Your new table is perfect to compliment the mirror, which is super. Love the naked topiary and the vignette on the table. I'm beginning to think you are French. You definitely have the sense of style of someone French. And I say this as a compliment! :-)

  35. I am a plate addict too, but I am also a lamp addict. We have so many lamps in our house that when we start to turn them off before we go to bed, my husband teases me and says we better notify the power company that the Freeman's are shutting down and beware of the power surge!! Needless to say, I love your lamp!!

  63. Debbie, I love your finds! And that lamp! That lamp! WOW! You have got to take me shopping with you. I would give anything if I could do something aside from order workmen around. LOL! We've had delays, and I can't blog from St. A. because I don't have computer access. Sigh. It's just nuts. I hope they will get out of there soon so the others can come. ;-)

On a happier note, I hope you are enjoying your spring.

  68. Deb, I think the "B" Angel is upon you! :) This lamp is GORGEOUS, and that's with a "B"! Hey, I love the new look of your blog, and the labels at the top. I checked out your ABOUT My Blog...and it was really heart warming...and totally explains why you can't get enough plates. Isn't it amazing how our hearts are so emeshed with things that are French. I am like 85% french, are you too? Of course, you at least SPEAK French, I just THINK it. :) haha~ Now, I have the records I listen to, but that doesn't help my French speaking much...I just smile French in a teeny way; don't you think? Oui? haha~ Hey.......this was a lovely post, as ALWAYS! I love reading each and every post you write, I'm a HUGE Fan! Hugs! ~CC

  69. Waaaaaa...that is SO NOT FAIR!!! You get ALL the good stuff, Deb. ;-)

Your lamp was a real steal...so much so, you need to go to confession!

The mirror looks wonderful with your artistic additions & the little table is just perfect for the spot beneath it. We had tables just like that when I was growing up. Wonder whatever happened to those?

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday & thank you for all that you share & teach us!
