Thrifty Treasures/Metamorphosis Monday...or...Vintage Tags and a Wine Storage Basket

monIt’s Monday again, so we get to display our thrifting finds and show how we spiffed them up into decorating treasures…at least, that’s what I hope I did! lol! I am doing a double post and hooking up with Rhoda at Southern Hospitality for Today’s Thrifty Treasures and also with Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Metamorphosis Monday!

IMG_7861 I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t put down my new Pottery Barn catalog when I saw their displays of baskets! Unfortunately, they are waaaay out of my price range, so when my friend Linda at Nina’s Nest and I went Goodwill hunting, I was on the lookout for some nice, big baskets. I didn’t have to look long! I spotted this one almost immediately…and only $3.93! My little wheels were already turning, because I had also noticed that some of the PB baskets were sporting vintage tags!

IMG_7854So I decided to make my own frenchy version. Inspired by some wonderful frenchy coasters that I had won from Lisa at Livin’ Louisiana, I took out my trusty stamps and waterproof ink from Hobby Lobby and a few shipping tags from Staples.

IMG_7856 First, I removed the string because I didn’t want to get ink on it, and then I applied a frenchy script. This stamp is called Le London and I love it because it’s actually French and not a bunch of gobbledygook!

IMG_7857 Next, I added a fleur-de-lis on top of the script.

IMG_7858 Then I used a cooled tea bag from some freshly brewed tea and dabbed it liberally on the stamped tag. (If you do not have waterproof ink, stain the tag with tea first, let it dry and then stamp it.) This helps to give it an aged appearance. You can stain it as dark as you like. I had previously soaked the string in the tea and reattached it.

IMG_7866 And here is the finished product attached to my GW basket. Oh là là!! C’est magnifique, n’est-ce pas?

IMG_7847 Now, I just add a few bottles of wine for that really frenchy touch…

IMG_7844 ...et voilà! I have now added a place to store wine and added a little frenchy pizzazz to my baker’s rack. I think it approaches the look of the PB baskets at a tiny fraction of the cost. What do you think?

page In fact, the frenchifying has continued to several other items in the house! Did I tell you that the package had 100 tags in it? Hmmmmm…

IMG_7881 Merci for stopping by! Please join Rhoda and Susan to see more thrifty treasures and amazing transformations from our very clever fellow bloggers! See you next time! A la prochaine!

The management wishes to thank Isabella for being such a sport and agreeing to wear our vintage tag, if only for 10 seconds, after which it was ferociously attacked. We would also like to thank our friend Carol for her suggestions for this post!

  1. Debbie, the last photo has me giggling as I write my comment. You are so clever! Love your sense of humor, sweet friend. Your Frenchified tags are adorable. Love the idea! I'm going to look for a stamp like yours. Do you remember where you found it? And the archival ink pad. I need one of those too. Thanks for sharing this ingenuity! Very creative!

  2. Oh Debbie, I love, love , love it. I think the basket is gorgeous and the tags are just wonderful. You are so clever. I think filling it with your wine is just the perfect accessory for the bottom shelf of your bakers rack. I think this is really super. I may need to put a tag on something. Your clever assistant today is so patient with you. So cute. Hugs, Marty

  10. Oh Debbie, this is just "great"!! What a wonderful way to use these tags. I've used them in the shop on old suitcases and other vintage items, but had not thought of stamping them first. SO.. you know what I'll be doing this next week when I open.. Love that kitty has a tag as well...hugs ~lynne~

  11. I love this. I can't believe Isabella let you do this, even for 10 seconds! Love the vintage look of the tags, they really came out well. And the basket is perfect on your baker's rack. But my favorite part is your "jolie chat" - did I say that right?? Hugs, Kat (or chatte haha)

  12. Adorable! I'm with you I so want several of the items in the new PB catalog. But the prices... Please! You are so smart with your stamp.

Did you see the French Wire candle sticks and baskets? I love them but something tells me I will find something very similar at Hobby Lobby.

  27. You are just too creative! I love the little tags. They add so much charm and personality to everything...even the already sweet and charming Isabella.

Actually, I can totally relate to you wanting to add tags to everything. I'm doing the same thing with that darn bead board wallpaper that Rhoda used on her cabinets. Nothing is safe or off limits from bead board wallpaper! My husband said, "It's a good thing I like bead board." LOL.

  36. I recall taking French in high school and was always baffled at how a table needed to be labled female or male... I dunno, it was obviously wayyy over my head.

The one line i recall is "what time is it?"...spose that might help me if i ever get the opportunity to visit France. But then maybe i could just kidnap you and take you with me ;)

Stop by my spot if you have a minute... I would love to see you.

  50. Debbie... I did almost the same thing on some note cards inspired also by Lisa's coasters that I won. I love your tags... and especially hanging on the basket... think I might just steal that idea! Probably won't try to hang a tag on the poodle tail though... I don't think Precious and Roxy would be up for that one...

I always enjoy your posts... wonderful ideas, beautiful photography... and a fun read!

  61. Debbie,

I was SO thinking the same thing when I received the PB catalog! Nice, but pricey. Love what you did. It looks like a million bucks.

What is that saying...Imitation is the highest form of flattery...we best not flatter PB by letting them know we are on to them!!
