Mosaic Monday...or...A North Georgia Farm Stand and "Foxfire Magazine"

I am excited to be participating for the first time in Mosaic Monday with Mary at Little Red House! Over the weekend, I visited the wonderful produce stand of Osage Farms in Rabun Gap, Georgia, and wanted to share my pictures of the beautiful fruit and vegetables! Most of the produce is from Georgia or Florida and, later on, much of it will come from the field that you can see through the window in the middle shot! Talk about fresh!! My friend calls this the big produce stand in the sky because there is none to compare. We drive an hour and a half and pass several others to get here, but it's worth it!

Interestingly enough, you can see Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School from the farm stand! Some of you will recognize it as the original home of the Foxfire Magazine!

If you are not familiar with it, it was first written by a group of students from this school as an English class project and has since evolved into a nationwide publication including twelve books. It is a sort of how to guide about life in the Appalachian Mountains, including making apple butter, beekeeping, using medicinal plants, dressing a hog...even moonshining!

There is also the Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center in nearby Mountain City! You could make a whole day trip of this beautiful area!

Thanks for joining me! Please head on over to Mary's to see who else is playing along and to find out how to join us! See you next time! A la prochaine!

  5. Hi Debbie,
I just love the color and smell of fresh produce in the summer. I'm so tickled you stopped by. I've enjoyed your style all the way back to RMS. I'm a bit of a plate addict myself. One of these days I will try to get a tablescape together...it's hard when most of my plates are on the walls...

  14. Cool. A magazine that informs me how to dress a hog AND make my own liquor is a must read!

Seriously, though, beautiful mosaic. I love fresh vegetables and a drive that's over an hour long through the countryside is a fun road trip as far as I'm concerned.

  16. Nice, Debbie! I love your veggie shots. I did this a few weeks ago to post on Outdoor Wednesday. I love the way veggies look when photographed, and those make a great mosaic.

Hope your summer is going well and that you are enjoying your little grandson.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  25. Would love to find a place like this within an hour or two of our home!!

I have several Foxfire books and get them out every so often, love them. They are among the books in the double bonnet secretary, in our room. During the 1970's, high school students, in my old hometown, Lebanon Missouri, published a magazine called Bittersweet, patterned after Foxfire. I have a few copies, that belonged to my mother. We cherish them.

  31. That music makes me wanna get out of this chair and do some good ole' fashioned Jedd Clampett clogging. :-D

But, I just ate lunch and I really don't feel like it. Oh well!

That is one of the prettiest mosaics I have ever seen. You shoudl send this in to Farmer's Almanac or some other publication.

Now I can't wait for all my garden veggies. I have already picked green peppers, tomatoes and jalapenos. I have squash and eggplant blossoms. yoohoo!

Hope you're having a great week!

    Hugs, Barb

  38. Debbie,
You won't believe the ordeal it was to get the chain cover on the entry light.

I added the chain cover before the guys installed it...you can only imagine what it looked like when they were finished!!! I talked them into letting me go up ther and adjust it...they used a hand-cranked lift...I had to stand on a wooden pallet and they cranked me 22 ft. into the air. I am just a little crazy. They laughed at me the whole time...but everyone agreed in the end that it was worth it!!! Even the installers.

As for the one in the dining room...all that was required was a ladder. Easy peasy!!!

They both were sewn on the sewing machine and applied befor installation.

I bet you wished you hadn't asked!!!

I hope you are having a wonderful day!!!
    XOXO
    Cathy

  40. I didn't know that! We've got to make a trip there! The Foxfire books are an invaluable resource!

Smyrna just got a farmer's market! Saturday was only the second time they had it and we had about 6 vendors. Lots of people showed up so I'm sure more and more people will be participating!

  41. What a tasty looking mosaic! Here in Vermont the frost threat has barely passed so we are still eating (mostly) grocery store veggies. I remember the Foxfire books from my grandfather's bookcase. He was a Boy Scout and those books were invaluable to him. ~Kathy
