Our First Foodie Friday!

Welcome to the first Foodie Friday, hosted by our hostess with the mostest, Gollum at Designs by Gollum! I don't know about you, but I am really looking forward to this! I know that so many of my blogging buddies are also wonderful cooks and I can't wait to see what they have dreamed up for us!

I have a new next-door neighbor...a wonderful, warm and gracious lady named Jung. She is from South Korea and English is a second language for her. Having been plopped down in the middle of a foreign country myself, I appreciate so much her efforts to speak our language and assimilate into a new culture. So my neighbor Karen and I, in good neighborly Southern tradition, took her and her family some flowers and cookies as a welcome to the neighborhood.

Then on Valentines Day, I received a visit from her, returning the kindness with this! Oh my goodness!! It is a Korean speciality, she explained , a mocha cake. Is it not the most beautiful thing you have ever seen? It is totally slathered in whipped cream and swirled with coffee-flavored glaze. Notice the little chocolate medallion reading Hansel & Gretel. I will explain more about it in just a moment.

I could hardly wait to have a slice! The cake inside is a light, fluffy chocolate that has somehow been soaked in coffee. Those are little chocolate covered coffee beans and chocolate striped straws decorating it. It absolutely melts in your mouth! I wish there were some way to send you a taste of it! Needless to say, it did not last long, this perfect little gem of a cake!

Wanting more...er...to know more, I researched Hansel & Gretel and found this...a wonderful Korean bakery, not too far from my house! It is owned by Helen Lee and her brother, Master Chef Yong Seb Lee, who was trained in culinary school in Korea. Hmmm... check out the goodies they are holding! Now that I am armed with this information, I feel a trip to Hansel & Gretel coming on!! After all, I might need another cake for Foodie Friday, right??
Be sure to visit Gollum at Designs by Gollum to continue your gastronomical tour of Blogland!

  20. Oh bother, another food to try and find! Chocolate and coffee - what else would a girl need? This looks incredibly edible! I'm afraid that would not last 5 minutes in our house and there are only 2 of us lol. What a sweet way for you to welcome your neighbor, and wow did she ever repay your kindness. I'm positive there are no Korean bakeries in Georgetown, but betcha I can find one in Austin - I'll be researching this tomorrow for sure. Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Kathy

  41. Sweets for the sweet, how appropriate can you get? Having no diet restrictions at present, I would have a field day in their place of business. Everything shown in the pictures looks like a delight for the taste buds.

I've already had to tell DH to stop for or favorite chicken on his way home and now I guess we will have to finish with our store bought red velvet cake. We've already had that twice and it is "really" good.

Now I can add your name to the list of whose fault it is, so I want feel so decadent. You are in good company though, with Gollum and Lynne.

  42. Hi Debbie...what a good blogger you are to remember to photograph that work of art cake before you gobbled it up...Your act of kindness did come back to you. ;-) Bo

  44. I also have neightbors on either side of me that are from Japan and Viet Nam. Both speak enough english that listening carefully I can understand. They both smile a lot and give me hugs. What more can one ask for from a neighbor? Oh..and both bring me fruit from their tree's...and there you have it. Perfection!
The food looks beautiful. What a dear neighbor you were to welcome her..and she to thank you in such a gracious way!
Now for countries of our beautiful world to do as well. :)
    Hugs.
