Happy New Year!...or...The True Test of a Good Son-in-Law

Happy New Year, everybody! I hope yours was wonderful! Ours involved a lot of eating. It was the traditional Southern-style New Year's Day dinner, as I explained in my previous post, which is supposed to bring good luck, good health and prosperity for the new year. This is actually my plate you're looking at. (Yes, I stood on my chair at the dinner table to take this picture while everyone else started eating. Sorry, Miss Janice!) This photo is kind of like the old Hee Haw bit, if you ever watched the show:
Hey, Grandpa, what's for dinner?
HoneyBaked ham, collard greens, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, rice, macaroni and cheese, cornbread and sweet tea...
Yum, yum!
Now...here's my son-in-law's plate...

Hmmmmm.....notice anything? This photo is more like Where's Waldo? Where are the collard greens and black-eyed peas? No cornbread, but that's OK. But no collards and no black-eyed peas??? You might as well just decide you want bad luck for the whole next year!! Poor thing...he really hates them! Hey...wait a minute...look there...

Ohhhh, yes...do you see? Way over there on the back side of the plate? One tiny black-eyed pea and one teensy shred of collards? Yes...what a good son-in-law I have! Taking one for the family! And yes, he did eat them...mixed in with his rice and tomatoes. I can breathe a sigh of relief now. It looks like 2009 is going to be a really good year!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  2. Ha...too funny! The question is did he eat that 1 black-eyed pea and that smidgen of collard greens. Actually I don't think you can call that collard greens...it was more like a collard green. :-) I see those beautiful plates you bought recently, too! Now about those meal worms, I only order them from Sunshine Mealworms in the spring when the bluebirds and other birds are nesting here in my yard. I usually have them here at the house for around 2 months. Lots of different birds enjoy them and appreciate the extra help in the spring when they are trying to feed those growing babies in the nest. :-) Susan

  14. Kudos to your son~in~law for eating a tad bit! He sounds like a good sport! My son dislikes beans or peas of any kind & won't even take one teeny tiny taste! I keep telling him just add a little hot sauce & you may discover it's really good. Anyway, your Southern New Year's Day meal looks wonderful.
    Smiles,
    Carol

  16. Happy New Year, Debbie! That food looks yummy and the table setting even yummier! Your son is funny putting a piece of black eyed peas just to say he ate one for good luck. LOL! I did not even know about this tradition until Laurie talked about it last night. I hope you wore a polka dotted outfit...Christine

  19. Very good son-in-law! Your food looks great BTW

I made black-eyed pea chowder (added a bit of spinach for wealth) & at first my daughter said she wasn't eating any, that I shouldn't be "so superstitious". *rolling eyes* But I insisted she take some to give to the kids & she tried a bite, telling me later that the soup "was really good." Score!!!!

Happy New Year! May you be blessed w/ many dishes. ;o)

  23. Oh, that's a hoot! But that boy did eat his goodness for a good start to 2009! Thank you so much for your prayers for my Mother. We're just taking it slowing and will have some health care nurses coming to help us next week! I would have loved to have a plate of that food! We did eat our black eyed peas!
